Chapter two

"Me!" I almost screeched, my voice a full octave higher than usual. "I didn't want to have to tell you this, or ever have to actually do it, but we would get a lot further a lot faster if we had someone working from the inside. A lot of their servers seem to be internal use only and if they are hooking them up to the web, it is only for short periods of time, making it impossible to trace. Someone in the inside may be able to find the information that we need and put a stop to all this." Nick explained. "Okay, but what has any of this got to do with me?" I pushed, not seeing the big picture. "Whoever we sent in would have to know what they were doing." Nick stated. "Yeah but you know more than I do." I pointed out. "But they are more likely to know who I am or spot me from a mile away. I am not exactly inconspicuous." he had a point. As with most male werewolves, Nick was much larger than the average human and given that they already were on the look out for us, after all the times alpha Ash and his pack had foiled their plans, he would not stand a chance. "But why me?" I asked again. I was not the type to go undercover. Like I said, I am only good as Punky Princess, Dawn is weak and small and would be easily squashed by the evil in Tallen Corp. "You are much better than you think Dawn. I know that you would be able to do this, but I won't make you. This is your job to think about taking on, but I do want you to think about it." Nick explained with a stony face, showing me that he meant it when he said he wouldn't force me to do it. My mind went to all the tens, if not hundreds of supernatural creatures that I had had to watch fighting for their lives or taking their last breaths. Would I be able to live with myself if I knew that I could have done something to stop all this and didn't. "How about you call it for today? Go home and get some rest." "I haven't started to look through the Tallen Corp stuff yet." I pointed out. "Don't worry about it, I can get through that on my own." I sighed slightly, but nodded, feeling like I needed to think more about what Nick had just said anyway. I pushed up from my chair and showed myself out, squinting slightly as I walked out into the mid afternoon sun. I was used to walking out and it being dark outside, but I was glad for the time to think things over. I slowly walked back to my house, hearing chatting coming from the other side of the door before I even opened it. I had slightly hoped that coming home early would mean that I would have some time to myself, but in a house of seven, I didn't have any luck. I opened the door to a football flying past my head as Nole shouted "Look out." I let out a sigh as I continued in, ignoring the football as it started to roll down the street. "Oh come on Dawny, you could have caught that." Greg laughed as he tussled my hair on the way past me out the door to pick up the ball. "Are mum and dads home?" I asked. "No, not for a few hours yet. Mum went over for tea at that woman Fiona's house." he told me, letting out a sigh as he held his chest. "Oh Fiona, now that is a she wolf I would like to get my claws into." Greg growled as he walked back inside, throwing the football back to Nole. "Ew, she is like older than mum and has mates." I pointed out as I shook my head at my brothers heading towards the stairs. "Yeah but imagine how experienced she would be and she only has two, maybe she can find room on her cards for a little bit of the Gregster." I ignored my brothers usually sexist banter and made my way up to my room. "Hey Dawny, your home early." I heard Nole finally realise as I closed my door and flopped on to my bed. How could I be expected to be miss super undercover agent, when my own family treated me like their baby Dawny. I hated that nickname, feeling like it undermined me and my intelligence. They didn't get me, not understanding why I was not interested in sports and fighting or boys the way other she wolves in the pack were. That was just not me, and I was not going to pretend to like that stuff just to fit in with them. Maybe it was the image that my family projected on to me that was the biggest thing stopping me from being able to jump at the opportunity Nick was giving me. Maybe this was my chance to get out from under my brothers shadows and be my own person. I stayed lost in my own thoughts until I heard footsteps come up to my room and a single knock before the door opened. "Nole, you are meant to wait for people to say come in." I grumble as I sit up. Nole ignores my remark and takes a seat on the bed beside me. "What is up Dawny? You never come home this early these days and you seem a bit troubled." Nole was my oldest brother, and what he lacked in intelligence he did tend to make up for in instinct. "Nick asked me to do something today, and I am not sure I will be able to do it." I admitted. Nole leaned back, looking cool as anything as he let out a sigh of what sounded like relief. "You will be able to do it. You can do anything you put your mind to." he simply stated, like it was the easiest answer ever. "But what if I can't?" I asked, not sure what I was expecting from my brother as he did not know what Nick had asked me to do or what my actually capabilities were. "You will. I know you will." he laughed, throwing his arm over my shoulder. "You are smarter than all of us Dawny, and I know you think we don't get it, because we don't, but Nick does and he would not ask you to do something if you couldn't do it." I hated to admit, but Nole was right. Nick would never ask me to risk my life if he did not think that it would be almost impossible that it would come to that. So, if Nick thought I could do this, then I guess I was going to go right into the lion's den. ~Trev~ I sat in my office tapping away as I always did late at night. I know I had been asked to put a stop to my digging, but I could not just leave the job unfinished. Ste had said that Alpha Eric was going to send someone in undercover, but that seemed to have been put on the back burner as it had been months since I handed over everything I knew and there was still no information about who they were going to intrust to get the job done. I hated to admit that I had not managed to get much further than I had before, especially having to work late at night so no one would know what I was doing. Maybe they had managed to find something that I hadn't, maybe they had cracked the code as to who was behind this all and were making big plans for a precision strike. I hated to admit that I was envious if they had, being able to do what I wasn't. Call it professional pride, but I like to think that I am one of the best at what I do, maybe even out shining Nick in many ways now. Maybe I was fluffing my own ego too much if I was right. I was pulled from my thoughts as I heard the door behind me open, knowing it was too late to hide what I had been doing from whoever walked in. I let out a sigh and turned to see alpha Ash, looking almost amused as he took in the monitors. "Something told me you would not be able to stop digging." he tutted as he moved over and sat in the beanbag in the corner of the room. "I'm sorry alpha." I sighed again as I looked up at the monitors. "Not that it has managed to do me much good." "Nick has reached the same point." he told me, making my head snap to meet his face which was now serious. "He has been holding back on sending someone undercover, hoping that he could find the answered he needed without doing so. But, there is nothing but dead ends out there and the girl he has in mind has just agreed that she will go in undercover for us at Tallen Corp." "I want to help." I blurted out straight away. "I may not have been able to crack this alpha, but I know I can help." Alpha Ash's face pulled into a smile. "I was hoping you would say that." he leaned back, crossing one leg over the other with his hands resting in his lap. "Nick is too conspicuous and may be on their radar, given he is mated to my mother. You on the other hand, you have hardly gone out in to the field with us and it is unlikely they will know who you are." "What is the job?" I eagerly asked. I had to do whatever I could to put a stop to all the evil that they had done, I had to do what I could to stop another werewolf or vampire from being taken and streamed to me over the Internet as they lost their lives. "You will not be able to actually infiltrate Tallen Corp, given that they will spot you coming a mile away as a werewolf. But you will act as the girl he is sending's sounding board. He trusts that your skills are still up to snuff and that if you can stay under the radar and don't mind moving off pack territory for a while, that you may be able to guide her and keep her on track." I looked at alpha Ash confused. "Why would it matter if they have seen me before if I am just acting as a sounding board for this she wolf?" I asked. Alpha Ash laughed to himself. "Because people don't usually live with sounding boards, so you are going to have to go undercover as her boyfriend." I let out a sigh. I did not want to have to play the part as some bimbos boyfriend and giving her the chance to take all the glory when the time came that we put a stop to Tallen Corp. But I guess if Nick trusted her, then she could not be completely clueless. I guess that it was a damn sight better than being stuck here, sat on my thumbs like I have been. "Fine." I sighed. "I'll do it." "I thought you would." Alpha Ash said as he pushed to his feet and clasped me on the shoulder. "So, you better get some sleep. Nick and the girl are coming here tomorrow before you and her become the happy little couple under cover." I grumbled at how much Alpha Ash was loving me having to play the boyfriend to this mysterious girl, that I had noticed alpha Ash had refrained from mentioning by name. I nodded my head however and switched everything off before heading to my room. I had my own cabin on the pack's territory, but my computer set up was still better in the pack house and so I had been spending more nights crashing here than there recently. As I flopped on to the bed, my mind tried to figure out who it could be that Nick was sending in to go undercover. There were not many in alpha Eric's pack who were tech minded like me and him, most opting for the more physical tasks. Completely drawing a blank as to who it could be, I closed my eyes and for the first time in months I did not have to toss and turn to finally drift off to sleep.
