35RabiesThe transporter was large enough to carry twenty soldiers and a Jeep. It was one of fifty cocooned in a blistering heat haze rising from the airport tarmac two hundred miles south of Detroit. The whole scene buzzed with Soldiers. War was coming, and they were preparing for the oncoming battle, piling equipment and supplies into the depths of the plane’s cargo bay like shoveling sacrificial blood victims into the open mouth of some huge beast. The army base had been appropriated for the Soldiers’ use some forty-eight hours earlier, after a short skirmish with the handful of US military left on site. They hadn’t stood a chance. Kevin hadn’t been involved. Like Conn, he’d been too busy tracking down an errant Swedish ex-soldier, who in his opinion had been given one too many chances
