My head was spinning and my heart was pounding so unexpectedly. He was here. He had come to save me! Everything could change now... The scent from this man was overpowering as he moved closer, a beautiful smile teasing at his lips. His eyes drifting over me with a hunger I could not explain, as he demanded to talk to his Alpha. This was my opportunity to have my life change. My fated mate had arrived!
But the cold blue eyes of Alpha Carter narrowed. “Not now, Rafe. Know your place. I do not appreciate you interrupting. We have business to attend to. Join the rest of your men and await orders.” The man’s words were blunt. Demanding. As I would expect an Alpha’s to be.
But this was urgent! This was my fated mate. He could not send him away. We needed to speak to one another in the least... He needed to try harder. Fight for time with me! But, with a defeated expression upon his face, the man I was assuming was my fated mate; the man I now knew was called Rafe gave the Alpha a curt nod, and, with one sad look in my direction, the warrior did as he was told. No...
I wanted him to whisk me away! I wanted to run away from the hell that I called home. My mate could do that for me, right? Yet, all my hopes felt like they were dissipating as he strode away to join the rest of the men. Following the orders of the brutal Alpha. My heart twisted in anxiousness.
Eyes were upon me... I could feel them... all waiting on me to continue as before. The guests were waiting for me to take them to Alpha Aaron. Maybe right now was not our moment. They were guests here for a few days. We would get our chance, surely? I could only hope we would find a moment together at some point. We would have to find a chance. I try to reassure myself. But the ache within my chest was unbearable. I wanted him by my side now! Maybe I could speak to the Alpha?
But as I turn to look at him he already has his icy gaze upon me. Angry eyes. A tight jaw. This man may be handsome, but those handsome features were certainly capable of an intimidating mean and moody look. “Are you frozen, little shadow? Because, if I am not mistaken, I do believe we have things to do, and I do not have all damn day.” His voice now near a growl. "Exactly why I did not want a measly little she-wolf to be assisting us. Evidently not capable." He added with a roll of his eyes, and irritation bubbled within my veins. Not capable? What would he know about what I was capable of? The s**t I deal with on a day to day basis... Straightening myself up, I quickly begin making my way toward the steps, expecting them to follow.
‘Alpha Aaron, I have the guests with me. I will warn you, the Alpha does not seem to pleased. Plus he seems quite difficult to please.' I began through the mindlink.
'Erm, Mari...' Alpha Aaron's tone was warning. 'Respect.'
I sighed. Respect? I was finding it increasingly harder to respect the man by my side. But, as an Alpha I was expected to. And, so far I do not believe I had done nothing to disrespect him nor his pack members. 'I know, Alpha. I have been nothing but respectful. But, to make you aware, there are a much larger number of guests than I expected.’ I explained with anticipation. ‘Warriors… one of which I believe is my fated…’ I added, in the hope he may take pity upon me.
‘Your fated, Mari? Oh, how wonderful!’ The excitement in my Alpha’s link was undeniable. Meeting your fated mate was a cherished moment for any werewolf. And for me it could be the escape I needed for getting away from the man who had made my life a living hell since the moment I could understand what life was…
The tone of my Alpha's link gave me the hope I needed that he would allow me the time I needed today, and in the coming days to spend the time with my fated. Perhaps even find an alternative assistant for the guests so I could spend time to get to know my mate before returning with him. I mean, I would return with him, surely... I had to...
“Alpha is waiting for us.” I turned to the men behind me, almost walking into the wall as I do, earning a hearty chuckle from the Beta, but yet another disgusted look from the delightful man who was the visiting Alpha. I was known around pack for being a little clumsy, a trait that unfortunately became worse when I was nervous.
“I think we already established that, Mari.” He said bluntly. My name sounding odd upon his lips.
I nod, unsure what else to say the difficult to please man. I was simply here doing the role asked of me. What worried me was that if no leave was given to me to spend time with my fated mate, then I would be expected to work alongside the ray of sunshine.
“Thank you for your help, Mari. The guard said you would be helping us during our stay. Which we appreciate." The Beta spoke with a kindness that is so unlike his Alpha it is unexpected. Two men, who I could only assume would be friends, yet so different. "Mari is an unusual name. I don't think I have heard it before.” He offered a friendly smile in my direction. “It mean anything in particular?”
I smiled awkwardly. “Erm, it is meant to mean beloved. Not that you would think so…” I say without thinking, Alpha Carter turns to look at me with his brows furrowed, and colour floods my cheeks as I realise I said more than I had even meant to. “I mean, it is a name my mother chose before I was born.” I stuttered, trying to cover up my mistake. “My Dad used it after she died, because he could not think of a better one, or so he says.” I continued to blurt out things I truly did not need to.
"Oh, I am sorry to hear..." Beta Hudson began.
“We do not need your life story. We are not here to become your friends.” Alpha Carter’s words were as cold as his stare as he interuptted his friend. “Just hurry those little legs along and get us to your Alpha.”
I swallowed heavily, dropping my eyes to the floor to avoid his intense glare. Truly admonished by the brute of a man. Working with him for the duration of his stay was going to be far from pleasant. I would have to hope my mate may save me... though then he would become my Alpha, I realised with a sinking feeling...
