My nerves peak as I imagine the doorbell ringing. Granted, it hasn’t yet, but I know it will, and that’s enough to panic me. Everest sits in the living room with his hand on the edge of the couch, watching Ben as he reads a book aloud for school. Normally, that’s my job, but he wanted Everest to listen and correct his reading instead this week. I don’t mind, but it means more time for me to contemplate the possible reactions of my parents to Everest’s return. Every other Sunday, my parents visit Ben and I at home for lunch. Usually, I prepare a roast, or we have lasagne or something. There is currently a curry on the stove simmering, but I highly doubt we’ll get to eat it.
