“How much money did they take?” one of the officers asked. Lily hesitated to tell them but knew adding another lie to her already altered story wouldn’t help her. “A couple thousand dollars,” she admitted with a wince. Carrying around that much money was suspicious as hell, but she wanted to be as honest as possible for Dianna’s sake. All of their eyes widened in shock, but Dianna’s grandson recovered quickly. “That’s a lot of cash to be carrying around, Lily,” he pointed out, not unkindly. “You wouldn’t be running away from home or something like that, would you?” he asked, his gaze again locking onto the mark on her cheek. “I’m eighteen,” Lily replied. “There’s no reason I couldn’t leave home.” Belatedly, she realized that she had essentially admitted that she had in fact run awwy.
