Lily took her shoes off to sneak up to her room as quietly as possible. Her heart raced as she tip-toed up the stairs. She gently and carefully closed her bedroom door behind her, trying not to make any noise that might wake up her father or brother. Her stomach was in knots at the thought that, at any moment, one of them could wake up and ruin her plan of escape. She’d hidden her packed suitcase under the bed, so she had to kneel on the floor to drag it out. She was thankful for the rug on her floor as she silently slid the bag toward her, but she winced when she needed to unzip the bag. Even that small sound seemed deafening.
