23A Remarkable RecoveryForty-eight hours after being admitted to the emergency room of the Nevada Central Hospital, Billy and Soren were eyeing each other over several empty Twinkie wrappers, a half-finished bag of Cheetos, and six kids’ juice boxes sucked empty with such force their sides had collapsed. They’d had three each, all apple-flavored, any real juice diluted with a hell of a lot of water. The feast in front of them was the result of shoving the little spare change they’d found in their pockets into the vending machines in the hospital’s public canteen.
On the first day of their recovery from the events at the Laser Motel, they’d been confined to side-by-side beds in the emergency ward, separated only by a cheerily floral-patterned curtain of blue irises and yellow daisies.
