26Fifty-Five Days LaterMoaning emanated from the vampire and grew louder with every passing second. It echoed around the abandoned house infiltrating every nook and cranny, driving Billy to distraction. It was the one thing about this idea he hadn’t anticipated. The vampire sounded like a drill bit attempting to secure a nail with no thread left; sometimes whining at a pitch high enough to alarm a dog, at other times, emitting loud gagging grunts. There was no place to hide. Billy had tried. He’d gone down into the disgusting basement and up into the attic. Both were infested with vermin: bats upstairs and God knows what form of rodent down.
