Mr. Woodard aimed for an entirely different target. His first hit went through the stomach of the driver of one of their two boats. He reloaded and hit the driver of the other boat directly in the head, the spear going through the man’s mouth and out the other side of his head. The fast elimination of the boat captains seemed to throw the other occupants of their boats off in a way that I imagined Mr. Woodard had anticipated. I admired his warlike savvy, wondering if he, like I, had guessed that those men driving the boats were perhaps leaders in this mercenary group.
