On their way back, Bella was afraid that James would say something provocative again so she closed her eyes and pretended to be asleep.
James knew what she was thinking. But he decided not to speak it out.
At their destination, James spoke gently to Bella, who was still pretending to sleep, “Miss Green, here we are.”
Bella opened her eyes and stepped out of the car. When she was about to get out, James suddenly grabbed her arm and put the flowers in her hand.
Bella held onto them until James drove out of sight. There was a bin a few yards away, an appropriate place for the flowers, Bella thought. Except, she couldn’t bring herself to do it. Finally, she hurried into her house and put them into a vase full of water.
