"Hey, Sam,” Dylan panted as he walked beside her. After class, Samantha had quickly left the room, planning to get to her last subject as soon as she could. That’s why Dylan hurried off to catch up with her. “Oh, hey! What’s up?” Samantha hadn’t expected to see him. “Hi! Uhm—I was just wondering, how did you get into Mrs. Peregrine’s class? Oh—what I mean is, her class is usually meant for—” Samantha cut him off. “For higher-class students. For the elite. Is that what you're trying to say?” “Yeah! Just that—” Dylan smiled timidly as they walked. Meanwhile, Jagger and Nick were trailing behind them, wondering why Dylan was mingling with a human. Once again, they had no choice but to follow him to make sure he wouldn’t do something stupid. “It’s just part of my course. I didn’t know it was only for elite students. They just gave me my subjects and the classroom assignments.” “I see. Anyway, are you free tomorrow? We’re having a bonfire party tomorrow night. Do you have class after seven?” “I’m afraid I do. Even if I didn’t, I still can’t go. Thanks, though.” “It’ll be fun, you know.” “And I’m sure it’s for the elites. I also can’t risk breaking curfew. I’m new here, and I don’t want to cause trouble or get kicked out.” “Haha! Don’t worry, I got you. No one will dare to—” “I’m sorry, Dylan. I have to decline. Thank you for the invite, but I have class tomorrow night. Really, thank you.” “Okay. I guess I’ll just see you around.” “Yeah. Bye.” Samantha hurried off, while Dylan stood there, watching her disappear from sight. “Dude!” Jagger startled him. “The heck, Jagger!” “What was that? Why were you following her?” “What’s wrong with that?” “Bro, you know the law,” Nick reminded him. “I know, Nick. But I didn’t do anything wrong. I was just being friendly.” “Yeah! And next thing we know, she’ll be hanging out with you all the time.” “Your point?” “Dylan, if Killan finds out you’re being friendly with a human, you’ll be dead!” “Haha! Killan can’t kill me. Besides, he loves me!” “You’re just lucky you’re his younger brother. Otherwise, we’d find your dead body in the middle of the clearing.” “Ugh! Screw that rule! For all I know, I’m not the only one mingling with humans. Besides, how did she get into our class if there was no consent? Samantha told me the subjects were assigned by Administration. They wouldn’t have given her that schedule without approval from the superior—and you know who that is.” “It’s Avalon,” Nick and Jagger said in unison. “Exactly! That’s why I don’t understand some of the rules. They allow humans to study here, yet we’re not allowed to mingle with them. That’s ridiculous!” “Yeah, you’ve got a point. Come to think of it, this is the first time we’ve had a human in class. And I never thought I’d say this, but I really appreciate Mrs. Peregrine now. She handled the situation well. Otherwise, Samantha could’ve been in danger just by being in the same room with Lycans.” “Right. She’s lucky Killan wasn’t there.” They were still on their way to their last class when Francesca, another Lycan, came running toward them. “Whoa! Hold on—” Jagger grabbed her arm to stop her. “I need to talk to Dylan.” Dylan raised an eyebrow. “What’s up?” “Killan’s not in his room. Have you seen him? You were with him earlier.” “That was an hour ago, France.” “Do you know where he might’ve gone?” “No. Why? What’s going on?” “Nothing. I just need to talk to him.” “About what?” Nick butted in. “That’s none of your business, Nick. I’ve gotta go. I need to find him.” Jagger snorted. “Dude, did you hear that? ‘None of your business’—as always. You’re still not her business. Hahaha!” “Shut up, Jagger!” Meanwhile, Dylan just shook his head, listening quietly. “Hi, is this Mr. Paul Salt’s classroom?” “And you are Samantha Porter?” “Yes, I am.” “Alright. Come on in. I just received your records. Mind introducing yourself to the class?” “Sure.” Samantha walked to the front of the class after Mr. Salt asked her to. “Hi. I’m Samantha Porter. I’m new here. I’ve heard this school has the best students and professors, so I hope we can all get along well. Thank you.” Unbeknownst to the class, Samantha was terrified. It wasn’t obvious from the way she spoke, but her knees were wobbling and her heart was pounding. She didn’t feel like she belonged. And that strange feeling she’d had since entering the school—she still couldn’t explain it. “Alright. Thank you, Miss Porter. Please take a seat.” “Thank you.” The class began. But a few moments later, Samantha heard a growl. It wasn’t loud, but it was clear enough for her to hear. “What was that?” she thought, scanning the room discreetly. Everyone seemed to be paying attention to Mr. Salt’s discussion. All eyes were on him. She shook the feeling off and tried to focus—until she heard someone call her. “Sam...” Immediately, she looked around to see who it was. But no one stood out. Still, she tried her best to stay focused until class ended. “Miss Porter, I’d like a word with you,” said Mr. Salt before she could leave the room. Everyone else had already gone. It was just her and the professor. “Yes, sir?” “I checked your record and saw something interesting. I was wondering if you’d like to join the Photography Club. I’m the head organizer, and we’re still looking for two photographers.” “I don’t think I’m a good fit, sir. I don’t have a camera or any materials—” Mr. Salt interrupted, “You don’t need to worry about that. The school will provide everything once you join. We don’t expect students to bring their own equipment.” “Really?” Samantha was surprised—and couldn’t hide her excitement. “Yes. So if you’re interested, I can add your name to the list.” Samantha was about to respond, but then Madison popped into her mind. “Can I think about it, sir?” “Of course. But we only have until next week to fill the last two spots. Hopefully, you can register before someone else does.” “Thank you.” Samantha was on her way to her dorm when she heard Madison’s voice—along with a man’s. Sure enough, Madison was having an intimate moment under a tree with a guy Samantha didn’t recognize. She quickly walked past them, avoiding her sister. As she neared her dorm, a guy in a plain white shirt and jeans, holding a cigarette, caught her attention. She knew it was against the school rules. She walked up to him. He was facing away. “Excuse me. Cigarettes are prohibited here.” The guy didn’t respond. He ignored her and started walking away. “Hello? Did you hear what I said?” Samantha was behind him, and though he still faced away, she heard a guttural sound from him. “Hey, mister! Are you deaf or what?!” She grabbed his arm. “The f**k?!” he snarled, and Samantha froze. She hadn’t expected that—and she definitely hadn’t expected him to look like a mythic god. For a moment, she was too stunned to speak, her lips parted slightly. “Who do you think you are?!” That voice snapped her out of it. “It doesn’t matter. But cigarettes are not allowed near the dormitory.” “Don’t you know who I am?” “Should I be scared?” Samantha shot back. The corner of his lips curled up. “Oh, you should be scared, little one. I assume you’re new here.” Suddenly, Samantha felt the air grow hot. Her breathing became unsteady. “Why should I?” she asked, trying to act tough, though she felt like collapsing. His presence was overwhelming—not from fear, but from something else. A strange attraction she couldn’t explain. “Because... little one... I’m the last person you’d want to meet.” He reached out to touch her—but she stepped back and gathered her strength to run. “Perv—!” That was the last word she threw at him before she sprinted into her dorm.
