Soul mates? Really?

1691 Words
He laughed. A deep, bitter laugh. “I don’t believe in love and soul mates Clarissa. The notion of two people born to be meant for each other is ridiculous and romantic love? That belongs in a fairy tale,” he said dismissively.  “What we have is pure lust. Nothing else. It will wear out soon enough. Maybe not now but soon, perhaps in a few months,” he added.  She felt hurt but tried not to show it. She truly believed they had a strong connection that is not merely lust or s*x. There has to be more to it. And she will prove it to him.  “You never know…we can grow to love each other,” she said. “Yes, but it will be a different kind of love, like how I love my brother and the child we will have, not the passionate romantic love you are thinking,” he replied.  He walked back to her and held her, gazing into her eyes. “Trust me. Falling in love is an illusion. It doesn’t exist. What we have now,” he kissed her deeply. “This, this is just lust and s*x,” he stressed.  “But…but…” she protested but he silenced her with a finger on her lips. “Don’t argue with me. God, I’ve tried. I was engaged once and it didn’t work out. There was no such thing as love between a couple, only lust and s*x. Once we get tired of each other, that will be the end to the relationship,” he said. “I once thought I was in love. Well, the joke’s on me. She chose another man over me despite proclaiming her love for me several times,” he added. Her heart broke for him. She can imagine the hurt he must have felt. It was exactly how she had felt when she found Nick with Bella.  She reached up and stroke his cheek gently. “I’m so sorry that happened to you. I promise I will not do that to you. She leaving you for someone else doesn’t mean love doesn’t exist. It just means you’ve not found your real soul mate,” she said. “And you think you’re my soul mate?” he pulled away from her, disbelief in his tone. He shook his head.  “No, there is no such thing. I think it is best we keep our marriage as per our agreement, without all these messy emotions,” he said with finality.  He placed a gentle hand on the slight bump on her belly. “Now, tell me, how is our child doing?” he asked. He obviously did not want to talk about love and soul mates anymore.  “So, you now believe it is yours? I’ve not done the DNA test yet to confirm it,” she said sarcastically, miffed that he refused to even consider her soul mate theory. He lifted her sweatshirt to reveal her bump and bent to kiss it ever so gently. “Hey there little fella, I hope momma has been treating you well,” he whispered to it.  She felt her heart swell at his gentle loving tone. It wasn’t as if he couldn’t show love at all. There was so much love in that one sentence, it made her heart ached.  If only it was directed at her. She felt silly to feel even a twinge of jealousy over a tiny fetus.  As if sensing her slight jealousy, he stood up and kissed her gently too. “Don’t get me wrong, I do care for you Ris. But just don’t expect me to fall in love with you,” he said. Just then, Jane stormed in. Like a hurricane. Her short hair wild. Her eyes wide. “Maximillian, you owe me,” she said to him then turned to Clarissa. “Okay, Ris, I found you…or rather, Kat and I, found you one of the best wedding planners around and he has started the ball rolling, as of now, at just the mention of your groom here,” she said. “So, we need to sit down now and work out the guest list,” she said.  She looked pointedly at Max. “If you are going to be here, you better help out. Go get snacks, dinner, drinks and be prepared to help make phone calls too,” she ordered him and pulled Clarissa away from him.  They headed to the sofa and Jane pulled out a notebook and pen from her handbag without waiting for a response from Max. He stared at her in amazement.  “I’m not your servant, Dr Jane,” he said drolly and sauntered to look at the list that Jane was already drawing up in her notebook.  “Well, you better be. This is your wedding too,” she shot back without looking up. She snapped her finger at Clarissa to get her attention. “Ris, focus! I need a list of your relatives and friends you plan to invite,” she said. Max looked at them for a moment and thought better of interrupting them again. “I’ll go get food and drinks then,” he said and left.  The two women barely looked up.  A few hours later, Max reappeared with John, Kat and Lisa in tow. And plenty of food to feed a troop.  “Here, they can help you with whatever you need to do,” he said.  John, despite his boring name, is a good looking blonde who’s almost as tall as Max. He has jade green eyes and a set of cheeky dimples when he smiled.  As for Kat and Lisa, they were gorgeous as well. Kat is petite with flaming red hair, creamy fair skin, freckles and large baby blue eyes. Lisa is a statuesque brunette with long slim legs and dark brown eyes. Clarissa wondered if Max only surrounds himself with gorgeous assistants. She looked at Kat and Lisa’s gorgeous sexy figures, both of them have large ample breasts while hers paled in comparison to theirs. She wondered briefly if Max had slept with either of them, or even both of them at the same time, and quickly pushed the thought away.  Jane was eyeing Kat lasciviously when Max introduced them. Clarissa could see the thoughts running through Jane’s mind at the way she was looking at Kat. She was probably thinking of ways to get Kat to go home with her for a quick romp or two.  She hoped Kat and maybe Lisa too were gay. Then, they would have no interest in Max at all. Again, she pushed her irrational jealousy aside. She must be becoming insane. She has never had this jealous tendency. Maybe it was the hormones, she thought.  John, Kat and Lisa came and sat with them while Jane immediately made sure Kat sat next to her.  Max went to Clarissa and pulled her up. “Come, you need to eat first, let your maid of honour handle it from there,” he said. He ushered her to the dining table where heaps of a variety of food are arranged like a buffet. There was fast food, pasta, salads and there were also steaks, oddly incongruent to the fast food.  “That’s too much food,” she said, feeling queasy from the sight of the steak. She has not been able to stand the sight and smell of any red meat for a few weeks now. There was a plate of salad, it looked like a safe bet. She took it and sat down, trying not to look at the steak but the smell of the steak hit her nostrils and she gagged.  Covering her mouth she made a run to the bathroom in her room. She reached it just in time before she knelt over the toilet and hurled into forcefully. Her half digested lunch of cheese sandwich and some fruits came out in a stream.  Max, who had followed her, held back her hair for her and patted her back gently.  “Are you okay?” he sounded worried.  She puked till she emptied everything in the toilet and continued to heave into it drily.  “Do you need to go to the doctor?” Max asked, sounding more worried by the second.  After a few moments of dry heaving, she was finally done. She sat up finally, dizzy from the effort, some of the vomit dribbling down her chin.  Max took out his handkerchief, a luxurious satiny piece of cloth, and gently wiped her chin and mouth for her. “Are you alright? Should you see a doctor?” he asked again. He looked so worried.  She shook her head and smiled weakly at his concern. He does care for her. It might not be love, but it could be someday, she thought.  “Don’t worry…our baby has been giving me a hard time, I was told this will go away soon as I enter my second trimester…although I am entering my second trimester now,” she said, placing a hand over her rounded belly.  He placed his hand over hers on her belly and bent down to it. “Hey there buddy, give your mom a break. She needs to eat so that you can be healthy and strong,” he talked to her stomach. He  removed their hands and kissed her belly.  This made her giggle. He is so adorable when he did that.  “I almost forgot to tell you what with the wedding and all, I’m going in for a scan on Wednesday if you want to come,” she told him.  “Really? Of course I am coming! This is my baby,” he exclaimed.
