I may look back and regret this, but I highly doubt it. Bright and early this morning I prepared my letter of resignation, effective immediately. I signed it, then scanned and emailed it to my shift supervisor, with a copy going to the division commander, and Human Resources. There was no going back.
Yesterday morning I had talked to a couple of the guys on the squad to get a feel for how the rest of the guys were handling the news of Jake's death. Jake had been well liked, had actually acted as a mentor to the many of the newer members of the force. Every last one of them was feeling the pain.
