At last, they had left, asking to be informed when Douglas's condition improved—no mention of whether it went worse or not. Once the doctor had given them the relevant information, they almost ran out of the building, not staying to see him. I had mixed emotions about that.
It felt they were so busy with their own lives that this was a blimp on their radar. Donna had complained about having to replace me because I refused to go without Douglas and to find someone else to give her away. It was all about them. I can't blame them, really. They've been spoiled with so much attention for so long; it's become ingrained in them that everyone wants to cater to their every need.
Well, not this girl or her family; they can book appointments that suit me to see my boys.
