Damon and I are in a car, heading for his parents house. The car's smooth hum beneath me should be soothing, but it isn’t.
Maybe it’s the destination.
Or maybe it’s the fact that Damon has been staring at me for the past five minutes like he’s trying to figure out what color my soul is.
I ignore him. Or at least, I pretend to. My fingers scroll mindlessly over my phone screen as I chat with Stephen.
Stephen: How’s the trip going with bossman?
He includes a number of suggestive emojis, and I roll my eyes.
Me: I haven’t quit yet, if that’s what you’re asking.
Stephen: Great. I’ve sent the necessary business updates to your email. Fill the bossman in. Hopefully he falls in love with you before the trip is over so he can be a little nicer to the rest of us.
He means it as a joke, I kn
