Scarlet was completely motionless. My legs trembled as I knelt beside her seemingly lifeless body. I put my ear close to Scarlet’s chest while feeling for a pulse at her neck. I wasn’t feeling her pulse and I wasn’t hearing her heartbeat or the sound of her breathing. I let out a strangled sob. I covered my mouth, stifling the sobs wracking my body.
