Meghan
I stretched as I woke up, feeling more refreshed than I have in days. Dylan and Niky were already gone, and I realized Dylan must have blocked the bond so that I could sleep. I rolled over and stood up just as the bathroom door swung open. Steam billowed out and my mouth went dry as Niky stepped out wearing nothing but a robe. Her hair was piled on her head wrapped in a hair towel. She smiled at me, and my breath caught in my throat. Why do I feel like this.
“Good morning Meg.” Niky grinned at me, as if she knew the thoughts running through my head. I tried my hardest to keep them from Dylan.
“Morning Nik.” I cough out a response. “How are you feeling?”
“Much better thank you.” She stepped into her closet, and I let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding. “What the hell is wrong with me?”
“Nothing.” The voice that had come to haunt me for the last year replied. Sam, my wolf huffed in annoyance at the voice.
“What do you mean nothing?” I snapped. “I am lusting after my best friend and sister-in-law.”
“No, you aren’t.” The voice laughed. “You should talk to your husband. He’ll know what’s wrong with you.” The voice and Sam receded to the back of my mind, as Niky stepped out of the closet wearing an official looking pantsuit. I grinned when I saw how confident she looked.
“We should go out tonight.” Niky laughed. “It’s been ages, and I need a stress relief.”
“Who are you and what have you done with Niky.” I laughed.
“I just-“ Niky paused. “I am not looking to hook up or anything, I will never be intimate with another person again, but I need to relax and blow off steam. We can invite Amber, who by the way I haven’t seen in a year, and Macy. Maybe Chelsea.”
“Sounds like a plan to me.” I pause. “Hey Niky, do you remember when we played spin the bottle?”
She turned to look at me, an unknown emotion flashed through her eyes. “You mean before our lives turned to hell?” I nodded. “Yes Meg I remember. What about it?”
“I-“ I froze. I wasn’t going to admit what that event had caused. Niky was suddenly right in front of me. Her face inches from mine.
“What is it Meg?” She whispered. “Do you think about that kiss as much as I do? Do you wonder what changed between us?”
I gasped as she leaned slightly closer. “The answer Meghan is that everything changed.” Niky pulled back, and I exhaled. “Everything has changed, and everything will change.” She left the room, and I was sucked into a flashback.
FLASHBACK
I don’t know how, but all of us were drunker than s**t. Alex and Justin were laughing at something Dylan said. Ethan was whispering aggressively with Mason, while Macy, Amber, Maya, Niky and myself were doing each other’s nails.
“You know what?” Macy yelled loudly after she took another sip from the bottle of vodka, which essentially drained it. “We should play spin the bottle.” Macy hiccupped and we giggled.
“Bad idea babe.” Ethan laughed. “We are all mated remember?”
“So, we don’t need to make out, but I think we can all handle the slight pain right besides we are all friends we know it means nothing.” Macy argued.
“I’m in.” Dylan cackled, and I agreed.
“Sure.” Niky shrugged and Justin gave her a lopsided grin.
Everyone eventually consented and we sat in a circle. Everyone nominated me to go first, since I was the newest addition of the supernatural world. I spun and watched it go round and round, feeling slightly dizzy because of the spinning, and finally it landed on- I looked up and saw it pointed at Niky. I gasped and everyone laughed.
“Come on you two.” Macy cackled as we stood up.
I felt a blush creep onto my face. Niky grabbed my face and kissed me. It was quick, but her lips were soft and warm. When we sat back down I noticed that neither Justin nor Dylan had flinched, but both looked slightly perplexed.
END FLASHBACK
The night had gone on. There were more than a few grunts of pain when someone didn’t land on their mate, except for Niky, Justin, Dylan, and me. It was as if the bond didn’t register that someone had cheated on their mate. It had been confusing, but we never talked about.
The rest of my day flew by quickly. I had the day off so after Skye’s appointment, we met up with Macy, Amber, and Chelsea at our favorite mall in California. The best girls day in a long time. Niky was like her old self again. The boys agreed to meet us at Freak Nation later for drinks and dancing. More than a few people were shocked to see Niky out and about. After Justin died, Niky didn’t leave the house. Rumor got around that the loss of her mate had killed her too, and none of us disputed the rumors.
I wondered briefly if Niky would start making public appearances again, but my train of thought was distracted by Niky passing shots to all of us. Macy, Amber, and Chelsea were ecstatic to get Niky’s invite for tonight.
“Oh my god!” Macy yelled as she downed a shot. “We haven’t done this in so long and I have missed you bitches.”
“Same.” Amber grinned. She was sipping on a strawberry margarita. “How have you been sis?”
“Honestly.” Niky sighed as she stirred her drink. “I have been struggling, but I don’t want to talk about it. I want to drink and forget about how much pain I am in.”
“Fair enough babe.” Chelsea nodded. “How’s the kids?”
“They are great.” Niky laughed. “Growing up so fast.”
I felt my heart squeeze. Niky hadn’t really been there for her kids for the last two years. No one could blame her, but she was trying to do better. “Mine are great too.” I laugh.
“Little shits.” Macy growled.
“I have five, so I know.” Chelsea laughed.
We caught up on our families, and by the time the boys got there, we were several drinks and shots in. Macy, Ethan, Amber, and Mason went and danced for a while, Chelsea and Jason made out in the corner of our booth and I was sure that baby number six was on it’s way. Dylan finally pulled me away to dance as well. I felt bad that Niky was sitting there alone, but she seemed so lost in her thoughts that I didn’t want to bother her.
“Should I ask Niky to dance?” Dylan asked me after a while.
“You could, but I don’t know if she would be comfortable with that.” I shook my head. “I need to sit down though.”
We made our way back to the table, and Dylan asked Niky to dance. “Sure Dyl.” Niky laughed. They headed out to join the others and I was left alone for a bit. Sam made an appearance along with the other voice. I knew what was happening to me, but I was in denial. I am not anything special, I can’t understand why the Gods would pick me.
“Go away.” Sam hissed at the second voice.
“No.” The voice snapped. “I am here to stay, now let me enjoy this buzz it’s been a while.”
“Shut up please.” I sighed.
“What’s your problem?” The voice asked. I could almost see her tilting her head at me.
“YOU!” Sam and I growled.
“This isn’t happening.” I sighed. “I can’t be.”
“Why not?”
“Because I am just a regular girl.”
“Bullshit.” Sam snapped. “You are anything but a regular girl.”
“Stop denying my existence.” The voice demanded. “And stop calling me the voice. My name is Tori.”
“Whatever.” Sam groaned. “I swear to the go-“
Sam’s voice got fuzzy. Everything seemed far way and I felt like I couldn’t move. My eyes scanned the room, but nothing seemed amiss. Except for the man standing by the door. He motioned for me to come to him, and I stood. It was like I was in a trance. I looked around and saw that none of my friends were paying attention. I followed him outside and around the side of the building. The warm California air made me like I was in a dream.
“Hello Meghan.” The man grinned. “Long time no see.”
“Jaden.” I growled. “What are you doing here?”
The man’s impossibly blue eyes widened. “Jaden?”
I looked closer and gasped. “It’s not possible.”
“Of course it is.” He laughed.
“No!” I screamed. “How could you be alive and not tell Niky.”
He took a step back. “Meg-“
“No Justin.” I growled. “Don’t say another word. This is a special kind of betrayal.”
I turned to walk away, but he caught my arm. “Meg stop.” He pinned me to the wall, and I gaped at him. “I am not alive.”
“Bullshit.” I struggled against him.
“Meghan you are astral projecting. I am not actually here with you at the club, I died two years ago, and I am still dead.”
I blinked at him. “Why me?”
“You are the fourth.” Justin tells me.
“I know.” I snap. “But what is the point if you aren’t here?”
“Meg I can come back.” Justin grins. “But there is just one tiny problem.”
“What is that.” I ask as he releases me.
“You must accept that you are the fourth Trybrid. Then and only then can I come home.” He tells me.
I look into his eyes and see that he isn’t lying. “I figure that it’s not as easy as saying I accept that I am the fourth?”
“Yeah.” He rubs the back of his neck. “You need to be turned.”
“Dylan will never go for that.” I remind him.
“I know, that’s why I will get to come back for forty-eight hours. If I can convince Dylan to turn you, then I get to stay forever.” Justin tells me. His eyes sparkle with hope.
“Justin I-“ I trail off. Am I being selfish if I don’t say yes? I try to rationalize, but I can’t.
“Take some time to think about it, but I need your answer by the end of the week.” He tells me. He turns to leave but stops. “Tell no one.” Then he was gone, and I was sitting back at the table.
“What just happened?”
