“Hey, beautiful,” Dean greeted Lara with a wink the next afternoon. He and Connor were both standing guard outside of Kennedy’s hospital room. Greg sighed heavily from where he stood beside Lara. He’d picked her up from the diner— Lara could have taken more time off, but she’d wanted to get back to work— and after a late lunch, they’d decided to visit his dad in the short time they had before their class. Connor rolled his eyes and slapped his friend on the back of his head. “Hey, Lara,” he said. “Hey, guys,” Lara replied happily. She actually liked that Dean wasn’t treating her any differently. “How are you doing?” Connor asked, his eyes filling with sympathy. Their friends all knew about what had happened between her and Jackson— well not everything, but they knew the gist of it.
