I had been a bundle of nerves since the minute I had stepped into the house after work. My heart had been thudding like a drum solo, and I was pretty sure I had developed a mild case of sweating in places I didn't know I could sweat. Thank God, Selene had swooped in like a guardian angel and taken Lucy out for ice cream after picking her up from school, giving me just enough time to turn the disaster zone that was our living room into something that resembled a functional living space. I had even taken a shower—an actual, thorough, adult shower—with soap and everything. This was not the day for a half-hearted rinse and praying deodorant would do the rest.
