16 Let's Talk

Morris POV As soon as I step off the elevator, I smile. I know I saw Elise this morning, but those few minutes weren't nearly enough. When my eyes shift, I finally notice that Loreli is standing behind Daniel's desk. I feel like there is a rock in my stomach as I make my way toward Elise. "What the hell is going on here? Daniel, why is Loreli behind your desk?" I try my best not to bite Daniel's head off since I've assured him I'm not a tyrant, but right now I'm pissed. There is no way for him to know about Loreli's bulls*t so I try to keep my anger under control. "Honestly, sir, I just got back from getting the phone you asked me to procure, so I'm not sure" he says. I'm just about to move next to Elise when she whirls to face Loreli. Hearing my wife put her on the spot has me internally fist pumping while keeping my face impassive. This b**ch doesn't know when to quit. She hoped that Elise would take her at her word. God, I'm so glad she didn't just leave without talking to me. I know I deserve her anger after my f**k up, but I need her to believe that I want nothing to do with this woman. Hearing her say that Melissa sent her down for a folder has my hackles up. There is no way Melissa knew that Elise was who I was meeting, but something feels off about the whole situation. Did she want to meet with me to get me out of my office? Is she helping Loreli? "Loreli, I think its best you head back to your desk. If Melissa needs anything from me, I will make sure Daniel delivers it so we can avoid any further misunderstandings in the future." "Of course, Mr. McNair" she says before scurrying off toward the elevator. "Daniel, it's very nice to meet you. My name is Elise McNair. I'm, Morris's wife," my wife says. Hearing her call herself my wife makes hope bloom in my chest. "It's very nice to meet you Mrs. McNair. I apologize I wasn't here to greet you," Daniel says, handing me the phone. "Thank you, Daniel. Can you please give Amber a call to come to my office?" "Of course, sir" he says, rounding his desk. I place my hand on Elise's lower back and lead her into my office. When she doesn't pull away from my touch, I count it as a win. Once we're inside she turns to face me, her expression unreadable. "I'm so sorry love. She had no reason to be at that desk. I swear to you," I start to say, but she cuts me off. "I believe you, Morris" she says. No four words have ever meant more to me. She must see the relief in my eyes, but I can tell she isn't to forgive me for my stupidity. I don't care how long it takes to gain her forgiveness as long as she doesn't leave my a**. "Thank you, sweetheart. You have no idea how scared I was when I stepped off the elevator and saw her standing by the desk. What exactly did she say Elise? I need to know everything." Before she can answer, the door opens and Amber steps inside. "Elise, its so good to see you again. I'm glad you agreed to come to the office. Morris has filled me in on the messages you've been receiving. Unfortunately, the little witch has been smart enough not to identify herself, but I'd like to talk to you about a couple of suggestions I had." I swear she doesn't take a breath and I smile when I hear Elise chuckle. "Hi Amber, it's good to see you too. I wish it was under different circumstances" she says, glaring at me. "Elise was just about to tell me what Loreli said to her when she arrived." Amber looks between us with clear confusion on her face. "Why would Loreli be here to speak with Elise" she asks. "I was called upstairs by the PR team to go over a new proposal. Apparently, while I was upstairs, Loreli came down for a document that Melissa wanted, but Daniel had gone to get the phone I asked for." Amber looks at me like I have ten heads. "You don't find it suspicious that her immediate supervisor called you upstairs, and she shows up on your floor when Elise is scheduled to come in" Amber says. "I admit it is odd, and I had the same suspicions, but how would she know about Elise? You and I were the only ones in the room." "I'm not sure, Morris, but something about the whole situation feels off. Elise go ahead and tell us what she said to you," Amber says. "When I got off the elevator I was shocked to see her. Part of me was pissed, and I thought about turning around to leave." My heart aches in my chest. What if she had just left? I shake those thoughts away and focus on the fact that she did stay. "When I approached her she called me Elise. She also called you Morris. She let me know that you were in an important meeting and weren't expecting me, which I knew was her first lie," Elise says. "Despite everything that happened, Morris, I believed you when you told me she was reassigned." "I have never lied to you, Elise." Apparently that was the wrong thing to say because anger flashes in her eyes. "No, you haven't. You just disregarded my feelings. You decided helping that b**ch was more important than what I asked of you," she says, her voice rising with each word. "I'm sorry Elise." She raises her hand, not wanting to hear my apology. "I know you're sorry, Morris, and I'm trying to forgive you, but I'm hurt and pissed right now." I nod and she continues. "I let her know I was there because Morris asked me to come. I could see she thought you had no idea I was coming. Then Daniel showed up and asked her why she was at his desk," she says. "So she was acting like Morris never reassigned her" Amber asks. "Yes, I'm positive if Daniel hadn't shown up she would have asked me to leave because you were busy," Elise says. I have never wanted to hit a woman in my life but Loreli trying to f**k with my marriage is making it hard to hold onto to that conviction. "I'm sorry you're going through all this, Elise. Between her behavior and the messages, I'm sure you feel like throttling your husband, but I assure you he is doing everything he can to correct his mistakes. He will be placing a camera in his office in case the suit chaser decides to do something stupid," she says. "I also gave him a recording device should she be stupid enough to come to speak with him again. I also suggested he give you a new phone so you won't have to continue to receive her disgusting messages. There isn't any way for us to prove it's her since it seems like she is using a burner phone, but I promise you if there is one slip up she will be out on her a**" Amber says, and Elise smiles. I miss that smile being directed at me. "I appreciate everything you suggested, Amber. I hate that any of this is happening. I never thought that some woman would try to come between us," she says, her eyes meeting mine. I hate the pain and doubt I see in them that I've caused. I can't stop myself from closing the distance between us and pulling her into my arms. The clicking of the door lets me know that Amber left my office. Having my wife in my arms and knowing I'm the one that's causing her this pain guts me. I'm glad she is allowing me to hold her. "Morris" she whispers my name. "Yes, love." "I don't want to lose us" she says. I tighten my hold on her. "I need you to hear me, Elise." "I would die before I let that happen. I know I've hurt you, my love, but I want you to understand, despite my stupid decisions, I love you and only you. I've never wanted anyone else. I will do everything in my power to make you believe everything I just said until my dying breath."
