A Shifter's Bite

2385 Words

I haven't gotten very far before a furry form is beside me, leaning against my side. “I'm not going to fall over Ward.” I say, and he gives me a soft whine. Three men race around the tent in front of us. Two are rebels, one the Woodsman. He bellows a challenge and grins fiercely at us as Ward pounces one of the rebels and I toss a dart at the exposed chest of the other. “You ruin my fun!” Yells the Woodsman, but I point behind him and he narrowly misses the swing of a soldier's sword. I straddle the man who was taken down by my dart and slit his throat as the Woodsman brings down the rebel with the sword. Ward runs by chasing another rebel and I haul myself to my feet. “You look a little pale, my Queen.” The Woodsman remarks. I smile wanly. “It happens when you've lost half your blood.”
