The passage is lit by sporadic torchlight, and within a short distance, a staircase leads downward that gives me a moment of panic. I yank Ward to a halt, taking several deep breaths. His hand settles on my back, and if it wasn't for trying to pretend to be fearless, I probably would have balked. “Give me a moment to adjust, Ward. It is pitch black down there. I can't see a thing, and frankly it bothers me, placing my feet where I can't see them.” I huff. Ward moves closer to me and tangles his hand in the hair at the base of my skull. “There's no shame in admitting fear.” Ward murmurs.
