Caught Red Handed
Isabella's POV " What's the hold up?" Steven asked me. " I'm almost done. This is all your fault, you didn't tell me that I had to pick a lock!" I said to him. I was irritated because this is an important job for me, this one job could set me up for the rest of my life. Steven and I met at work four years ago. I was eighteen years and I had just left home. I didn't want to leave home at such an early age, but with a mother like mine, I didn't have much of a choice. I saved up for six months to leave my small hometown and try to make it in the big city, which wasn't easy. I have always had the love of art and when I got a job at an art gallery, I thought that I was one step closer to my dreams. Working at an art gallery was supposed to give me a chance to expand my knowledge of art and the love of it. Two months into the job, I met Steven. He came to the art gallery looking to buy an expensive Banksy painting. I knew that we didn't have it so I politely told him that we didn't have the particular painting he was looking for, even if we had it, I doubted that my boss would have kept it looked away. Besides all of that, the art piece he was looking for was stolen from the art Museum decades ago, no one even knew where it was or who had it. I suppose he realized that I hadn't caught wind of what was happening in the art gallery. Needless to say that he came back later on, when my boss was around. They disappeared into the back. I guess one can say that curiosity got the best of me, I sneaked in and listened in on their conversation. It turned out that Steven didn't come to buy the painting, he was actually selling the painting to my boss. I saw her give him a duffel bag full of money. I won't lie, it got to me. I didn't tell my boss about what I saw, I feared that she would fire me, which would have been bad considering that I had just signed a years lease on an apartment. I saw Steven a few more times and one day, I was at the park painting the trees and Steven showed up. I was surprised to see him there as I had never seen him there before. I hadn't made friends, painting was my solace and liked to do it in the park. I go to the park on my off days. . " Isabella right?" he asked me. " Yes, Steven right?" I said to him. He smiled when he heard me say his name. " Tell me Isabella, how would you like to make fifty grands in one night?" he said to me. At the mention of the money, I dropped my paint brush. That was a lot of money. " Fifty what?" I asked him. " Fifty thousand dollars. Cash!" he said to me. I had never had that kind of money before, anyone would have been foolish to turn it down, but I had to know what the job was for first. " You got my attention," I said to him. " I'm glad to hear that, now we can't talk here, perhaps you could come over to my house later on? We can talk about it there," he said to me. "Steven, I have seen you a few times at the Gallery, but I don't think that I know you well enough to come to your house," I said to him. I was telling him that because I didn't trust men, but then again, if you grew up like me, you would understand why I didn't trust men, for one, all of the men I had met in my life were not good men. " Isabella. You're beautiful, but this is about business and I don't play with my money, " he said to me. I looked at him and something in me told me to trust him and I did. I trusted him and took his address. Later on, I went to his house and when he told me what he wanted me to do, I didn't even think that I could do it. He wanted me to steal a painting for him, a Picasso, his earliest work which was also thought to have been lost long ago. He told me that my boss was a broker, that clients tell her what they want and he finds it for them. " You want me to steal a painting? I'm not a thief Steven!" I said to him, ready to walk away. " But you're stealing from someone who is not even supposed to have that painting, that means that he won't go to the cops, fifty grands for one job Bella," he said to me. " No!" I said to him, determined that I wasn't going to let him turn me into a criminal. " Don't be too quick to say No, it's an easy job, no risk," he said to me. " Who's this person you want me to steal from?" I asked him. " Someone whose name you don't need to know, only that he is out of the country," he said to me. That was four years ago, what can I say? Temptation got the best of me and I agreed to do the job. He was right about one thing, it was an easy job. I came in as a maid, the guards didn't even ask for my name when I went in. I was scared and nervous, even though Steven gave me the combination to the safe. I got the painting and when I gave it to him, he gave me fifty grands. Steven and I became friends, I have learned a lot from him over the years. Now, here I am, doing yet another job, my last one. I tuned the hair pin and the lock clicked. I smiled and opened the door, I waited for an alarm and nothing came. " Are you in?" Steven asked me over the earpiece. " Yes, but didn't you say that there was an alarm system in here?" I said to him. " There is, but I took care of it, we have ten minutes before it goes off, you need to move," he said to me. " Okay," I said and took out my phone. According to Steven, no one is supposed to be home and from what I could tell, he was right, the house was quiet, but that wasn't the only thing I noticed about the house. Everything about this house screamed 'money'. Even the chandelier looked expensive. I walked up the stairs and found myself standing in front of a door with a gold handle on it, the only one, just like Steven said. " I'm at the door," I said to Steven. " Good, now remember that there are lasers in there, so you have to be careful," he said to me. " Can't you turn them off?" I asked him. " If I even attempt to hack in the security system outside the alarm, the fail safe will be automatically switched on and you will be locked in the the house, so no, I can't switch them off," he said to me. " Fine," I said and put my backpack down. I took out a bottle of spray. I opened the door and sprayed in the room, soon I saw rays and rays of lasers beaming in the room. I didn't trigger anything, I just wanted to see how they were positioned. I could see the painting. The Paul Gauguin painting wasn't the only expensive painting in that room. I saw paintings that were thought to be lost centuries ago, paintings I knew people would kill to have. I have never questioned a job before, but something didn't feel right about this one. Every painting in there was worth tens of million dollars, it was like I was in an art Meusem. I know that this wasn't like any other job we have ever done. I have been to houses of people who collected art and at most, they would have maybe four to five pieces of expensive art pieces, but this room was full of them. " Bella? Can you see the painting?" Steven asked me. " Yes, I can see the Gauging, along with about three Da Vinci's, and about five Picasso's, those are just the one I can see from where I am standing, are they fake?" I asked him. " I don't think so, Bella we are there for one thing, get the painting and get out," he said to me. " If all these other pieces are real, why take only one painting?" I asked him. " Because we are not greedy, we take only what we need, you know that," he said to me. I could hear what he was saying to me, but I didn't believe it. I know Steven, there was something else, something he wasn't telling me. " Who's house are we robbing?" I asked him. " Come on Bella, you know you're not supposed to ask that, we are running out of time!" he said to me. " No Steven, tell me truth, whose house are we robbing?" I asked him. " Some Italian guy, rich but not famous. Now can we get back to the job?" he said to me. " Fine..." I said and looked around for a way across the room, then I saw something on the wall, something that didn't look like it belonged there, a drawing of a woman, it didn't have a face, as if the artist was still trying to make out the features. The drawing didn't look straight. Now I'm not saying that I am a genuis, but everything art piece in the room was expensive, why hang that drawing? I took a deep breath and fixed the painting, the lasers went off. " Yes!" I said. " Do you have the painting?" Steven asked me. " Not yet, but the laser beams are off," I said with a smile and walked to where the Gauging was hung. I put my backpack on the floor and took out a plastic cylinder. I took the painting off the wall and put it on the floor, I carefully took the painting out and rolled it, I put it inside the cylinder and put it in my back pack. " We're good, I'm coming out," I said to him. " Good, cause we have two minutes till the alarm goes off," Steven said. " I'll be in the car in two minutes," I said and walked out of the room. I made my way to the bottom of the stairs. I touched the door knob and then I heard a sound of a short gun behind me. I stopped dead in my tracks. " Where do you think you're going?" A deep male voice said from behind me. " Bella, who's that? What's going on?" Steven asked me over the earpiece. I didn't say anything, I was frozen where I was standing. " Turn around slowly..." the man said to me.
