Chapter 1

Aldric's POV I sat at the table, with the envelope before me. It has the picture of the girl I am going to marry. And this is the first time I'd be seeing her. I remember how the mayor looked the last time I saw him. It was probably around three years ago, if I am not wrong. He was five feet tall, pot bellied and bald headed. I don't want to think about what the girl looks like. If she takes after her father, I would be doomed. There was a soft knock on the door and I shoved the envelope into the drawer before asking them to come in. Once I saw Zane, I rolled my eyes. Don't get me wrong, he is my half brother. Yes. He is my second in command. Also yes. But that doesn't mean I should tolerate the asshole. "Is this a good time to talk?" He asked me and all I could do was nod at him. "Why?" He asked me and I knew what he was implying. "Because I need to take care of my people" I paused, watching him sit in the front of me,"it is my responsibility" "You can care for your people in a different way. One that doesn't include internal wars. A queen of a different race is not really a great decision, brother" Zane shook his head. Well, sometimes even I do think that this is not a great plan. And that this will only further doom me or us. But as a King, I don't have many options in my hands. I don't have another way. I need to do this for my people. If humans allow it, then my race will flourish again. They will have their jobs, livelihood and so many more. For now, we are all cramped up here in this space wondering when the sun will set every single day. And after the sun sets, we do nothing. That's the part that's bothering me. "There you go with your zoning out again," Zane's voice brought me back to reality again. And let me tell you, the reality is harsher than what I dreamt. "If you made your point clear, then let me tell you I am well aware of what I am doing. So I suggest you do what you usually do," I dismissed him but he wasn't moving even an inch. I hate hate hate my father for this. "Don't waste my time, Zane" I am now growing more irritated. "You are wasting your time. Your life. For what, brother? A human girl?" He asked me and that's when I realised something. "You think I am marrying her because I love her? Zane, I don't even know her" I shook my head at him and then realised it's a waste of time. He wouldn't listen. "That's even a better reason why you shouldn't be marrying her," Zane tried to argue. Now I am growing tired of this. "Don't make me order you as your King. I am currently telling you as your brother. Leave," I said, with my left eyebrow raising. Even Zane does that. That's something he and I both have in common. Probably that we inherited from our father. "Then do whatever the f**k you want," he said as he kicked his chair, standing up. With that, he left the room. Leaving me all alone with my own thoughts. Now I know I keep saying that I already made my mind up about this entire wedding thing, but deep down I am a tad bit scared. I really don't know her. I don't know if she would blend in well. I don't know if she would cause trouble. I don't know if she and I get along well. I know nothing about her and it sort of scares me. I waited for a few more minutes to see if someone else would walk in. When I came to a conclusion that no one will, I opened the table drawer and grabbed the envelope once again. The seal is still intact. It has the city's emblem on it. A rose sitting on the spot where two swords collide. That's been the symbol of their state for centuries now. I tapped my fingers over the table, nervous as hell. I never knew opening an envelope could be this hard. I carefully removed the seal and finally opened the envelope but before I saw her photograph, Martel walked in this time. "Good evening, Your Highness" he bowed to me as he walked towards me. I pointed to the empty seat and he took it with a smile on his face. "Is there an emergency, Martel?" I asked him. Because there is no way Martel woke up this early just to talk to me. I mean, to us vampires day actually starts just when the sun is about to set. So this is sort of an early morning to our race. Now that's another reason I wonder if the new bride would be able to adjust to. "Nothing in particular, Your Highness. But your decision has been making me think a lot recently," he said. Now for his age, if he says that there is something up then there definitely is something up. "What is it?" I asked him, carefully placing the envelope back in the same drawer. I think this is a sign of the universe asking me to wait for a few more hours until I see her photograph. "The last wedding between a vampire and the human did not end well. I hope you do remember that," he said and I nodded. "It was centuries ago. Moreover no one wanted that," I shook my head at him but all he did was nod at me. "Yes, Your Highness. But do make sure to talk to the bride before you head for the wedding in a few days. Ask her if she wants this wedding. Ask her if she is okay and only then, I think it will be a successful marriage," he told me. Honestly I don't think that's a bad idea. Talking to the girl, I mean. "After all, claps come from both the hands" he said as he walked out again. I sat there in my chair for a while, and just when the supper was being served, I quickly wrote back a letter to the mayor. About the phone call. Well, even I am a tad bit curious to know about that one girl who is ready to marry the Vampire King. Even when she knows for sure that her life would be at stake.
