Renee blinked back to her consciousness.
Although it was over, the intrusion of the test still hummed in her mind.
… What if they find out?
… What if they already knew?
… Sensed it?
Fear coiled around her throat like a large hand ready to crush a grape in its grip. It was an ugly thing. One only she could see and feel. Still, she swallowed back her dismay, hoping to just be dismissed.
“How are you feeling?” Mrs. Cannoble asked.
Even her voice seems strained.
“Fine,” Renee allowed some truth to slip through.
There really was nothing wrong, per se. It was just the looming threat of what could happen if her family found out.
“Just fine?” Mrs. Cannoble prompted another response. “You look pale.”
“Just side effects,” Renee deflected. “Can I go?”
