The snow sparkled under the late afternoon sun, but the tranquility was shattered as the first flash went off. A rapid succession of blinding lights followed, accompanied by shouts that pierced the air like jagged edges. My heart dropped as I instinctively pulled Ellie closer, shielding her from the growing swarm of photographers.
“Mr. Carter! Is this your child?”
“Rose Bennett, why hide this from the world?”
