On their way back to the patio, Kayla felt better.
It was as if she was finally seen.
Everyone knew parts of her story. Her family were there for most instances now, less before… and all the while she felt as though she couldn’t completely reach them. She knew they were doing their best, as she was too, but what Ben dug deep for, what he knowingly faced to find her again was more than she could understand herself.
They walked side by side, hand in hand, no one overtaking the other as they went, aside from Ben’s sheer size. Kayla felt like an equal, it was odd and welcome all at once; unlike all she’s experienced so far.
That is, until her eyes met that of her family.
