Kross’s voice cut through the space between us, low and steady, but it landed like thunder.
“The first time I saw you,” he said, leaning forward slightly, eyes locked on mine, “you were in a suspicious alley, sneaking around. For a moment, I actually thought you were spying on me.”
I tilted my head, a humorless smile curling on my lips. “And in that same suspicious alley,” I shot back, arms folding tightly across my chest, “I found you too. So forgive me if I wonder what exactly you were doing in the black market. What was it you needed to get so badly, Kross?”
He clicked his tongue and leaned back slowly in his seat, exhaling like he had expected that retort. Maybe he had.
