Zaid truly didn’t sleep. Manuel had kept him company through a portion of the night, but he had fallen asleep during their conversation and left Zaid to blame himself for the rest of the dark hours.
He thought about stuff that wasn’t important, stuff he thought he’d forgotten, and he thought about stuff that he knew he would never be able forget…
He’d done so many things that he now regretted, and it was time he paid for his sins. That was probably why he left the shed even before the sun came out and was now sitting on the floor by Denae’s door.
He had taken a bath in the river on the pack lands and put on a pair of the clothes she had given to him. He had even washed his hair and let it loose so it could dry naturally. It felt nice to be wearing something without numerous holes in it,
