Lucas's POV:
I walk with my mother to her room. My father sits on the bed holding his phone.
"Come over here, please. Both of you." He says.
My mother and I walk closer to the bed and sit on the edge.
"Makenna, you there?" My dad says into the phone.
"Yeah, I'm here." Makenna says.
"I need to talk to all of you. These past couple of months I haven't been doing my job. I'm sick. It's cancer. I've been at doctor's appointments and treatment sessions and the whole thing, trying to avoid having to tell you kids this. But after speaking with the doctor and your mother, I think it's time."
My mom takes his free hand and smiles sadly.
"I'm dying. I have about eight to nine months, no more than a year left to live. The
