6. Being eaten half of the time is amazing

"Ms. McLeish, care to explain what you are doing?" "Huh?" I raised my head to look at Mrs. Ferdinand narrowed her eyes at my amateur doodle on the back of her classwork book. I was so lost in my thoughts about West's shape changing eyes that I had randomly doodled something. The one thing I wanted to do was hide it and let the ground swallow me whole with the book when I realised what was drawn on the paper but then Mrs. Ferdinand had already picked it up to scrutinize it properly. "If I'm not wrong, this must be Mr. Stanley trying to throw flames out of his mouth?" Mrs. Ferdinand's words made me hide my face behind my hands while the whole class erupted in laughter. "Well, I must admit that it's a really good drawing if I ignored the fact that Mr. Stanley is the star of this picture. I will let it slip this once just because it's funny," I looked up hopefully and surprised with her words as she added, "but for not paying attention, this will be the first and last warning for you, Ms. McLeish. Next time, you will be in detention." I sighed in relief while letting my head down in embarrassment, not before nodding in reply. Students were laughing around the room making me flush redder than I already was. I wouldn't be surprised if my cheeks were glowing red already. Mrs. Ferdinand placed my book back down and headed towards the front of the class when the bell rang. "You sure do hate Mr. Stanley if you drew him as a fire breathing monster," Mitch commented walking to stop by my desk. "Mitch, it isn't like that..." I rolled my eyes trying to defend myself. "Whatever it was, it wasted Mrs. Ferdinand's good five minutes, that I'm glad. Keep up the good work, McLeish!" Saluting like a soldier, Mitch turned on his heels and pushed himself into the group of students that were getting into the crowded corridor. Sighing out tiredly, I picked my bag up before stuffing it with another book of mine. The class was pretty much empty, except for Kai Barbosa who still remained in his seat, his nose ready to dig into his phone. With the colourful light flashing on his face, it was evident that he was playing some game. I had noticed that he spent most of his time staring at the Mobile screen, like any other teenager of our age. I silently admired his bright red fringes that covered half of his forehead, contrasting his violet eyes which were solely focused on whatever was happening on the screen while his fingers tapped away furiously on it. He too had a clear paper white skin like that of West's. They looked related to each other even when they were poles apart in the looks department. While West had a box type face cut, Kai and Dylan had longer, angular daimond faces. Sort of feminine looking, yet not very feminine ones. As if being called, he suddenly lifted his head up and stared right into my eyes. His violet eyes resembled a stormy twilight. The sunlight made them look like a hurricane swirling, like an actual storm had been contained behind them. I was in awe, very much amused and totally mesmerized looking at his eccentric eyes. Watching me shamelessly staring at him, Kai pushed his phone into his back pocket, picked his bag up and walked out of room without casting another glance at me nor saying anything. And like a drooling high schooler I was, I watched him go. The ringing of the short bell broke me out of my trance letting me realise that I was running late for my next class. "Oh god!" I couldn't help but groan to myself as I sprinted out of the class and into the corridor. ******** "You are late," Lavinia turned to point out as I sat down before her. "I know, I know," I whispered back quickly keeping my bag down and taking out the stationary and history notebook. "You are lucky that Mr. Clarke had been called out for something important, else you would be getting a detention." I just rolled my eyes at her words correcting her exaggeration, "more like a pointed look and a warning not to be late." Clearing his throat, Mr. Clarke walked back into the class and started, "okay class. Sorry for that unexpected delay. Today, we are starting with a new chapter. The Indus valley civilization." And that was it, everyone groaned put loudly upon hearing another ancient civilization name. Don't get me wrong, the civilizations are really interesting and all but continuously studying one civilization after another had me wanting to pull my hair and run out of the classroom. And hearing the similar groans from the rest of the class, it looked like they shared the similar thoughts. "Nope, not gonna work. Nothing is going to stop me from starting this chapter today. In Indus valley civilization, two major cities hold most of the historic significance than all the other smaller villages in that region. The first one being Mohanjodaro and the second one is Harappan." And like that the lecture resumed for another hour. We were drained completely by the time the last bell rang. It was like someone had squeezed the energy out of us leaving only a robotic body behind that walked like a zombie at the moment. Mitch ran past us before high-fiving his friends. Okay, maybe it was just me who felt drained out. "My life is so boring and tiresome. Why do I have to be born as a human? Why not anything else? Why oh god? Why?" Lavinia groaned before throwing her hands in the air. There you go, the dramaqueen has started again. "What did you want to be if you weren't born as a human?" I giggled a bit at her thought process. "Anything but human. A cat, rooster or even a fish! It would be better than being a human!" "Yeah, being eaten half the time is amazing," I retorted stopping before my locker and opening it. "Eaten? Rooster and fish is fine, but who is crazy enough to eat a cat?" She looked at me quite confused making me smirk and say, "dogs." She shook her head and added, "change of plans. I would rather be a witch, vampire or even a ghost." "You can still manage to become one of it if you jumped off a cliff," another voice replied sarcastically from behind making us look over our shoulder. Duncan stood there with a teasing smile, still carrying his book and his bag hung from his shoulder. "And who in the hell are you?" Lavinia struck hip out and placed her hand on it as she spat out the words. "Duncan Brighton," he raised his hand for a handshake which caused Lavinia to only narrow her eyes on it and whipped her head away huffing arrogantly. Duncan's smile wavered a bit on watching Lavinia act that way. "Vini!" I whisper yelled at her suddenly feeling awkward and embarrassed about the situation she had just created for everyone. "What?" She grumbled moodily under her breath, really getting on my nerves. I gave her a pointed look making her sigh apologize before adding, "whatever." Seriously? What was with her attitude today? Why was she behaving like a spoilt brat? Before I could say anything to her, she turned around and headed towards the main door. "I'm really sorry on her behalf. She is never like that but I don't know what happened to her all of a sudden..." I watched Lavinia open the main door and disappear behind it. "It's alright," Duncan replied making me turn to only find him looking at the ground as he scratched the back of his neck. "It wasn't nice of me to be sarcastic when we've never talked before. I didn't have an idea that she would take offence. Tell her I'm really sorry," with that said, Duncan walked back looking dejected before jogging out towards the exit. I really felt bad for Duncan. For how much I've come to know him, he was a good guy and he definitely didn't deserve that. I also happened to see the other side of Lavinia that I had never thought would have been there. Letting the thoughts cloud my mind, I slung the bag over my and started to walk towards the door. The corridor was empty indicating that almost everyone had left for the day. I must have been one of the last ones to leave. I was only a few feet away from the door when I heard the footsteps pounding rapidly against the floor which became louder and louder as if someone had been running towards me. Out of curiosity, I stopped and looked over my shoulder just to get a hard hit at my shoulder and almost lose my balance but I managed to stay upright. Gasping out loud, I turned around to find Dylan Barbosa who was on his knees picking up the fallen books and other stuff from his open bag. His chestnut hair looked darker due to lack of strong light and he seemed to be in a rush. Out of courtesy, I bent down and started to picking things up for him. I had only picked up a green colored clay bar when I found imprints of what looked like both the sides of key on it. "What the-" even before I could complete the sentence, the clay bar was snatched from my hands making me look up at the snatcher, Dylan, who was glaring at me. His amber eyes flashing like a flame that was ready to burn me into ashes like the fire from the hell. His sharp features kind of intimidated me. For that moment he looked inhuman. Especially his aura, it was powerful and dominant, like he was a superior being. He had already collected all the things up as he rushed out of the door. "What was that about?" I only ended up frowning at the door trying to make sense of what had just happened. Whatever it was, one thing was clear, Dylan Barbosa was up to no good. The question was how badly was it going to effect everyone around here? And there was something strange about all the three Adonides. I was cent percent sure that they had been hiding something. And from now on, I was going to keep a close watch on them. Or I could even follow him out and see what this was about, with my very own eyes.
