“Princess?” I looked up to see William standing in the doorway. “Can I come in? Or would you rather be alone?” I lowered my gaze. Slowly, I shook my head. “I don’t want to be alone.” He slowly crossed the room and sat on the bed next to me. “I’m sorry I hit your dad,” he said softly. “I’m sorry I hit my dad.” The tears formed and I just couldn’t hold them in. I was too tired and I simply had no more energy left. So they fell, coursing down my cheeks and falling into my lap. William sat there next to me, not touching me. “What he said, it’s not true. You’re a beautiful lady.” I didn’t look up. “I never should have called them. Never.” I began to cry in earnest now. “I just thought that maybe after all these years, they’d change. That they’d be proud of me. That they’d love me.” S
