I tried to see his face through my blurred vision. His voice sounded like he was choking. I thought I saw the shimmer of tears in his eyes. But they’d kicked me in the head. And my vision wasn’t too clear.
“William?” It was all I could manage.
“Don’t talk. I’m going to get you to the hospital.” He pulled out his phone and I drifted in and out, trying to follow his words. “Yeah, Diane?”
Who the heck was Diane?
“It’s William. Look, I’ve got an emergency. My girlfriend’s been beaten badly.” He listened for a moment. “Hell no, I didn’t do it. What kind of a man do you think I am?” Again, he listened. “Please, I’m on the way. Just have a stretcher ready. Please.”
