Chapter 3

2009 Words
“Ready?” Pierce asked when he saw me going out of our room. “Yup!” We’re already done taking a shower and we’re off to go. I asked him to drop me off at my favorite milk tea store. They have branches nationwide and it thrilled me knowing they also have one near at school. My classes would start at two, whereas Pierce would be at three and he only has one subject today. After I got my order, I went to the gate entrance. Pierce had gone to another gate for the vehicle's entrance. He strictly told me to text or call him once I’m in the classroom. I was at the gate almost inside when someone bumped into my back and my drink fell on the ground because of the impact. I just barely drank it as I planned on bringing it inside. “Oh, my!” I was ready for war. Grrrrrr...! I was going to confront him and ready for war, but he spoke first. “I’m sorry Miss. I didn’t mean to.” Giving him a deadly look while my brows were in one line until my reaction had changed. I was mad few seconds but surprised after realizing who he is. “Austin??!” What is he doing here? I mentally asked. He was curious too. He didn’t recognize me at first, but his face lightened up when he inspected. Is he blind? “Hailey??!” Finally! “Wait, why are you here?” I asked, while moving to the corner as I was blocking the students’ to enter. “I transferred here a year ago. You? Why are you here? Don’t tell me you transferred too.” “Yes. I’m a transferee here.” I said while my eyes automatically wandered to the milktea on the ground and I felt sad. “I’m really sorry Hailey. Let me buy you a new one now. What is your class, by the way? Austin might notice my reaction. “2pm.” I told him. “Oh, good!. We can still get another drink for you..” Somehow, his offer lightened my mood, but I eventually gasped when I checked the time on my watch. “Oh my God! I’m gonna be late. I only have 15 minutes left. Sorry, Austin. I gotta go..” I left Austin without giving him the chance to react and the guard let me in when he saw my ID, but he didn’t let the one before me. I overheard them talking about IDs while I walked away. This school is very strict with identification. No ID, No Entry. Nigel had told me it’s because of one incident. There was an outsider who sneaked in and was running amok into one classroom. One student had almost got killed. Though it was a long time ago but it caused extreme trauma to everyone. One simple negligence and affected everyone inside. “Hey Hailey!” It’s Austin. “Sorry Austin.. Let’s talk some other time. I’m really in a hurry right now. I have to find my room.” I can’t afford to be late on my first day. “What’s your room number? I probably know it so I can accompany you.” “Uhm..” I stopped and checked my schedules. “Room L303.” I told him. “Oh! Microeconomics?” “Yes. Do you know where that is?” He chuckled. Did I say something funny? I asked myself. “I know where that is. Let’s go..” We used the elevator to get there. “Thank you again Austin.” I said when we arrived near the microeconomics room. “You’re welcome. I’m just a few blocks away from your room” “Oh okay. Uhm, I’ll go in now.” “sure. See you around.” I feel like I am in an audition when everyone inside the room is staring at me as I walk to the backseat looking for an available chair. Whew! They are scary! “Hi. Are you re-taking failed subject?” A guy asked. “Oh no. I’m not. I’m actually new and this is my first day..” “I see.. That’s why I haven’t seen you before. I’m Jace. You?” “Hailey.” “Nice meeting you Hailey.” I smiled. “Thanks.” Majority of students are already here, then a few minutes passed and a woman holding a black folder walks inside. She might be Ms. Guzman, our professor. “Alright. Good afternoon class..” “Good afternoon Ms. Guzman.” “We have transferee student joining with us today. I think she’s here now. Let me call her. Hailey Cortez? Hailey, are you here?” I raise my hand to get her attention, and she nods. “Come in front and introduce yourself to everyone.” She sounds strict. “Okay.” I suddenly feel overwhelmed when I get to see the entire class. Wow! I’m not used to have a lot of classmates in one subject. In my old school, we’re only less than twenty, but here is more than that. “Hi. My name is Hailey Cortez. Please call me Lei and I am a transferee. So please be kind to me. That’s all. Thank you.” I smiled at them. “Welcome aboard Hailey. I just hope you won’t get bored in this class.” Others are laughing at Jace’s side comment. Ms.Guzman stops the commotions as the other students tease one another. I quickly sit back and listen to the discussion when Ms. Guzman starts her lesson. We’re just halfway through the discussion when Jace gives me a piece of paper, so I ask him, “What’s this?” He shrugs, “I don’t know.” I open the folded paper and I read what’s written. “Hi Hailey. Are you free later? It’s me, Jaxton. the guy wearing black on your left. I immediately look at my left side and there he is. I know it because he motions to himself as the one who wrote it. I smile back at him, but I also motion that our professor is discussing and we should listen. I keep the paper, not bothering to respond there. “Whew! Finally! It’s over!” One of my classmates exclaims it and causes Ms. Guzman to retort.. “Do you also want your grade here to be over?” Uh-oh! She’s strict. But students didn’t take it seriously as loud laughs were echoing in the classroom. Good luck, dude! Hahaha! I heard the other one commented too. I don’t know their names yet, but I feel like they’re fun to be with. “You guys prepare for tomorrow’s exam. Let’s see if you can still feel bored.” Exam? Wow! This is my first day. How can I catch up? My sentiment was like imitating when I heard some of them disagreeing about the exam, too. Ms. Guzman didn’t care. She walked out of the room after she took her belongings on the table. “Hi Hailey! What’s your next subject?” Jaxton asked when he walked with me. I find his name funny as it sounds like a name of a game that I used to play. “Amm.. Accounting 3 is my next subject.” “Cool! We’re actually classmates there. Did you choose block subjects? The one until nine?” “Great..! We have same subjects to take. Majority of the classmates we have in Microeconomics are also our classmates in Accounting. We only have three repeaters in Micro.. they’re already seniors.” “Really?” “Yeah.” “Then I’ll go with you guys. I’m still unfamiliar with the rooms. I also don’t know where I can find those classrooms.” “Sure. Come on!” “Okay.” While we’re talking as we head to the next subject, others also walk with us. Their faces are familiar. I’ve seen them in Micro. “Hi Hailey. I’m Alwyn. Alwina by night and Alwyn by morning.” I laugh at how she introduced herself. Her voice change from a man then to a woman. She’s a trans woman, but she looks like a real woman. “Let me hold these.” Someone grabbed my books then also introduced herself. “I’m Brad.” “Hi Brad. But you shouldn’t take my books. Haha! I can carry them, you know.” “Nuh, you’re fine Hailey. These weigh nothing.” “Let him girl. He’s actually a mutation of sloth who’s always lazy to bring his own books. Besides, don’t believe him. His name is not Brad. It’s Brando. He just wanted not to sound like a hot guy.” “Hush Sophie... You’re always being funny, but not really!” Brad said. We laughed at their mini arguments. “Hahaha! Nice..” I said “Oh, by the way, I’m Sophie. I’m the muse in the group but I guess not anymore.” “Hi.. What do you mean, not anymore?” “Well, someone just came and get all the attentions that I should get.” Was she referring to me? “Ha?! Who?” Sophie rolls her eyes at me. “Is there other student new here?” “Me??” Am I a threat to her? “Of course! Unless you find Jaxton, Brad or Alwina beautiful than me. Chour!” Sophie was laughing at me. Then Alwina butted in. “Paaaak!” “Haha! You’re funny!” I’m so amused at how Alwina flicks her fingers. Meanwhile, Jaxton and Brad have their own topics. Jax is beside me and next to him is Brad, in which I look like small if I’ll be in the middle. They’re tall. I’m actually in between four of them. We walk as if we own the whole corridors. “Hi Hailey.” Three girls greeted me in unison as they hurriedly walked downstairs. “Hi.” I greeted back and smiled at them “Who are they, Jaxton?” I asked him when they were out of sight. “Who? Those girls?” “Yeah.” “Oh, they’re also our classmates. Naiomi, Remi and Grace.” “Oh, okay.” “They’re also best friends and they always in a hurry to go to the room as they always wanted to sit in front.” Alwina added. “True! As if we’re gonna sit in front. Like duh! Never.. I hate Accounting but have no choice.” I actually love math and I guess Accounting will be fun. I mentally say it. Sophie is so pretty in her Korean outfits. She looks like a Korean too." “Hailey, why did you transfer here?” Brad asked. “Oh, it’s my brother’s choice. He’s studying here, and he wanted to monitor my grades and basically me.” “Whew! GoodLuck girl.” Hailey said. I chuckled. “Yeah.” We’re now in the room, and I remember Pierce. Oh no! I fished my phone in my bag, then checked it. Alot of missed calls from him and several texts. Pierce: Are u n class now? Pierce: Are you okay there? Pierce: babe?? Pierce: bz? Pierce: babe.. Those were twenty five minutes ago, so I replied. To Pierce: SLR, I survived 1st subj. I guess I’ll be fine until later. I’m in my 2nd class now. “Do you already have locker Lei?” Jaxton asked. “I do. It’s just I can’t be late on my first day so I didn’t fo there besides I also have to find it.” “Well, the locker area is just on the lower ground. Do you want to put your things while we still have time?” “Uhm.. sure. How far is it?” “Just at the ground floor of this building.” “Oh, okay.. Sure. Let’s go.” Jaxton grabbed my other books as we went out, but not before telling the others where we’re going.
