Chapter - Nineteen

Dexter’s POV

I woke up earlier than usual and went to the headquarters. Even though I knew there was a lot of time to meet with Ms. Kate , I wanted to be here. I walked around in the corridors , and looked around the rooms from outside. I then went to the terrace and stood there for a while. I felt like I should go to the farthest end and stand there.

I went and took in the amazing view that greeted me. Sunrise. It was beautiful. Reddish orange light emitting from somewhere far behind the skyline. Suddenly my phone vibrated. I casually turned around to check whether there were any security cameras and pointed one at the entrance. Thankfully I was far behind from it.

I received the call . It was Sameer. “Yes” I replied indicating I wanted to keep this confidential no matter what. “Chief, as you suspected we found someone else’s fingerprint on the pendant . It was the only one apart from Ms. Alonso's . “ “Good , tell me who it is” I asked him and I could sense his hesitation. “What is it Sameer?” I asked him . Whatever it is I wanted to know. “It is new fingerprint. I mean it’s not registered in the data base sir.” He said. “Ughh. Do one thing Sameer, check it in other data bases but do not let out the information. Use some hackers if you need. I’ll take care of the consequences” I said. To my surprise he agreed immediately.

I stood there for a while and then headed back to our cabin. Stella was already there and she was shocked to see me. “ I didn’t think you would be coming anytime before 12” she said. I needed a distraction and she was perfect for it. “Didn’t get any sleep. By the way you look beautiful today” I said and she blushed. “Thanks”.

I pulled her into a hug. A friendly , consoling hug. It was nice. She stood silent for a minute and then hugged me back. We stood like that for a few minutes and then I pulled apart. “I know you have a lot going on in this case Dexter. You can rely on me for anything you need” she said and I smiled and nodded.

“Had breakfast?” I asked her and she nodded a no. “Let’s go get some food then.” I took her hand and led her out to my car. We decided to go to the nearby restaurant and grab few sandwiches. We sat back in the car and opened our sandwiches. It was good. Obviously it was Stella’s choice. Mine would never turn out this good.

“So, what is the plan for the day?” she asked me. Small talk. “ Meeting up with Ms. Kate and then meeting up with Mr. Logan and then we’ll see what else we have to add to the plan.” I said with a sigh in the end. “This is taking way too much time and patience from me. This is the longest case I have ever been on” I said and she chuckled. “ Everything has a first time chief” she said teasingly. We laughed and spoke for a whole randomly about the weather and stuff.

When it was time to return I felt like I should tell her something. Something really important and something she should know. “ Stella, I want to tell you something. I know I have already told you that after I am done with this case I will ask you to be my girlfriend but I’m not sure how far that is true.” She gasped and I laughed hard. This was fun. “ Look whatever I said was true. But not the way you took it. Whatever happens by the end of this week, even if I win or lose or drop from this case or maybe continue it by convincing the head we will go on our first official date by next week . I promise” I said and she let out a sigh of relief. She leaned in and put my arms around her to hold her but she took me by surprise.

We kissed.

It was nearing 12 when we went back to the headquarters. Ms. Kate had to be somewhere so we decided on doing a video call. I opened my laptop and waited for the clock to strike 12. As soon as it was 12 I opened the website and then started the call.

“Hello, Ms. Kate. I’m glad that you agreed to do this call. It is very important” I said and she nodded. “Hello officer, I’m sorry if I had behaved any rude that day. I didn’t mean to be like that. Just circumstances you know” she said and I agreed. She was in a bad mood that day.

“Anyways, Ms. Kate, I wanted to know a few details about the pendant. You said you and Ms. Alonso got the same type of pendants made. You both have both your photos in it. Am I right?” I asked her and she nodded. “Ok. You have your safely and we found Ms. Alonso’s somewhere. One thing I wanted to know was did she remove her pendant and keep it anywhere? Like usually did she do it?” “No. Most of the times she used to wear it. She only removed it when she would go out to functions.”

“Where did she used to keep the pendant on such occasions?” I asked her . “In her safe. She had one but then something went wrong with that and she had to give it away and buy a new one. She hadn’t bought the new one until the time she got umm... Kidnapped” she said. “Im sorry, so you mean that she could have been wearing it when she didn’t have the safe? Because she didn’t have any other place to keep it?” I asked her and she nodded. This proved on thing that the pendant was with her and that the kidnappers threw it there . So I need to get hold of the owner of that fingerprint.

I thanked Ms. Kate and then sat back on my chair.
