In any way I can

*George’s POV* She pulled away from me. We had just shared another amazing moment where our bodies and souls melted into one, and then... she pulled away, leaving me feeling like only half a man. I couldn’t help staring at her as she bent down to pick up her discarded clothes off of the elevator floor. I was still half dressed, standing in a daze, with my jeans hitched on my thighs and my c**k out. This woman could give me whiplash with her moods, but I wouldn’t change a thing about her. When she turned, I noticed her mask had returned to shut me out, putting distance between us and shielding her from experiencing emotion. She could make me shiver just by being near me, but when she looked at me the way she just did, her eyes cold and expressionless, I had a shiver course through me for a whole different reason. “Babe, did I do something wrong?” I asked as gently as I could, even though my voice still came out in a rumble post orgasm. She refused to look into my eyes. I missed the intimacy we shared when we stood under the warm water in the gym’s shower. Somehow, the water washed away the heaviness that lay between us. “I’ve told you before, I belong to no one.” So I did something wrong. My crime was calling her what she was, my mate, my life... the only thing in the world that mattered. She was mine, but she fought it. “I am my own person!” she exclaimed, looking at me with a burning heat. Her eyes glistened in the luminescent lighting, betraying the mask she wore. “But I am not,” I told her, “Don’t you see... you own me.” I took a step towards her, reaching out to touch her. I moved slowly, unsure of what her reaction may be to my advance. I swallowed at the lump in my throat. “I’m sorry,” she whispered, her tense frame softening as her shoulders dropped and her chin tilted down to her chest. “This just confirms that we need guidelines, rules per se, to stay safe.” “Safe?” I asked with a frown. My mind raced as I tried to think of reasons for her not to feel safe. “Yes,” she said, looking directly at me. “It will not break me when you eventually decide you are through with me, and I don’t want to leave you broken, either. I can’t stay away from you, but we have to be responsible here.” I felt my chest constrict and my heart pound heavily in my chest. My mate had been hurt. I knew it now. The suspicion I had was now confirmed. “Who had hurt you?” My voice was quiet, while I felt like I was about to explode. I just needed a name, any name. I would kill him. “It doesn’t matter,” she told me as she let out a sigh. I could see through her. It did still matter; she was just trying to keep it to herself. She was being a martyr when she didn’t need to be. “It matters to me,” I told her, my hands running slowly down her bare arms until I took her hands in mine. She felt so fragile in my hands. I had a powerful urge to protect her, to avenge her, but more than anything else, I had the urge to hold her. “Don’t do that,” she whispered, looking down at our hands. “What?” “Don’t you dare fall in love with me.” She looked up at me with her eyes filled with unshed tears. Pulling her into my arms, I held her to my chest, enjoying the feel of our naked chests pressed together. I wrapped my arms around her delicate body, running my fingers slowly up and down her spine. I could feel her heart rate go down, her breathing stabilize, and I noticed mine did the same. That was one perk of having a mate. Being with your other half assisted in not only comforting but also healing. I only hoped that it referred to emotional wounds just as much as physical ones. She could heal me, make me feel whole, and bring me to my knees in a single heartbeat. I could feel her insecurity being absorbed into me as I took her pain onto me. I could see through her, see her true colours, the ones she hid from everyone else... and she was f*****g beautiful. “It’s a little late for that honey,” I kissed her head, squeezing my eyes shut as I allowed her scent to fill my lungs. Burning a path right to my heart. “If you need structure... or rules, as you said, that is alright. I will do anything if it helps you to feel safe.” Her arms went around my waist, and her hands ran up my back as she held onto me. “Thank you,” she whispered. I meant it. I would do whatever she needed to feel safe. I would walk through fire if she needed me to. What I needed no longer mattered when my world revolved around her. “I am sorry I can’t be what you want,” she told me. “I will have you any way I can,” I said, tightening my grip on her. She pulled away from me again, this time keeping eye contact. “First rule... We do not mark each other.” I replied with a nod. “Second, we keep our relationship private. No telling everyone that we are fated to be together.” I nodded again, a heaviness settling on my chest. “Third rule, possessiveness is a no go. You will not assault anyone you may or may not see as a threat.” “Alright.” “Anything you want to add?” “Yes,” I answered as I looked at the way her hand fit into mine, “only two.” “tell me,” she said hopefully. “one, we are not to pursue any other relationships. And two, we should always remain honest with each other.” “You must know, I don’t believe in monogamy, but if you promise to keep me satisfied, I promise not to look elsewhere.” Her words were like a dagger to my heart. The mere thought she could ever consider another partner after experiencing what we had made my blood rush with anger. I could never look at another woman in the way I look at her. “I will have you in any way I can,” I repeated as I bent down to kiss her.
