“Wake up; it’s almost dawn,” Varin said.
Thorat cursed himself before he even opened his eyes. He should have known not to fall back asleep. He felt the spot beside him, on the other side. It was empty. He had one blanket wrapped around himself. The other, the one that had started the night on top of him, was gone.
“Where’s Eppie?” he asked.
Varin yawned and looked around. “Don’t ask me. She did come back from the village, didn’t she? Or did I dream that?”
“She came back,” Ferrent confirmed. “We were all awake. She said they were going to light the pyre at dawn, and something about the Cereans. I can’t remember exactly what.”
