Joel sends me a message later that night letting me know that I am expected out on the training fields at 9:00 tomorrow morning. I briefly wonder why he texted me rather than mind-link me, and I almost ask him, until I remember I don’t care.
The next morning, after dropping Neo at daycare, I arrive at the training field at 8:45. Joel is already there with a few of his students and some of the men I usually see working in town. Oliver and Greg both give me an uneasy smile when they see me. Oliver says something to Joel, who looks up at me as I approach. His expression is unreadable, but he gives me a small nod in greeting.
