Chapter 1- Mate
It was a fine afternoon, but Kira’s mood said otherwise. She was bored to death listening to her classmates’ non-stop bickering. Their teacher had rushed off to a sudden meeting with the Faculty of Arts, leaving them with sheets of paper to answer. As soon as the school bell rang, she immediately grabbed her things and rushed toward the table, leaving her answer sheets behind. Thinking about the jobs she still had to do, she dashed toward the door, squeezing past her classmates to get out quickly. But little did she know, Blake was already waiting for her outside. The moment she saw him, she abruptly changed direction. “Hey, Skye! Wait up!” She pretended not to hear and continued straight toward the main exit. “Come on, Skye. Talk to me.” Blake caught up to her side quickly. “I really don’t have time for your jokes, Blake. Not now, okay?” She shot him a death glare. “Hehe! That’s not the reason I’m here.” But she just walked past him. “Skye—” Still no response from Kira. “Alright, if you don’t wanna talk to me, I’ll just go to your house and tell your par—” “Fine! You win! Now, what do you want, Blake?” She was in a hurry because of her part-time jobs. She had to pick up Elijah, her neighbor’s kid, from school and then head to another house to clean a basement. “I just want to apologize. I was mean yesterday—I went overboard. I’m sorry, Skye. I shouldn’t have done that.” “Apology accepted. Now, please get out of my way.” “But we’re good, right?” He gave her puppy eyes, smiling apologetically. “Yes, we are. But if you keep following me, it means you’re up to something again.” “I just want to offer you a ride, Skye. Consider it my peace offering.” “No. But thanks. I’ll just see you tomorrow.” Kira turned away, waving the back of her hand dismissively. “Okay. But… are you going somewhere else?” “Look.” She faced him again, frustrated. “I have two part-time jobs, Blake, and I really don’t have the time for you right now.” “Oh, okay! See you tomorrow then?” “Yes.” Kira was practically running now, desperate to get away from him. She knew if she let him keep talking, she’d never get her jobs done. Blake was the only person who truly cared for Kira, but just as much as he cared, he annoyed her, too. Though her classmates and teachers called her Kira, Blake insisted on calling her by her second name, Skye, because to him, she was his serenity. Meanwhile, Kira ran as fast as she could across the campus to the elementary building. She had to pick up Elijah, a grade-one student. Because of his mother’s job, Kira always stood in for her after school. The pay wasn’t much, but she needed it for her college fund. She hurried to Elijah’s classroom, taking nearly five minutes to get there. “Hi, Elijah!” she greeted just in time. The boy looked up, all smiles, expecting his mother. But his face fell when he saw Kira. “Hi, Kira. Is Mommy going to be late again?” Kira knelt in front of him. “Yes. I’m sorry, Elijah. But you know what? She promised she’d be home before dinner.” “Really?” “Uh-huh!” She patted his head and gave him a sweet smile. She took his bag, stood up, and together they said goodbye to his teacher before leaving. When they arrived, Kira made sure Elijah’s grandfather was home before heading to her next job. She decided to walk to her next part-time gig, arriving drenched in sweat. A few moments later, someone peered outside the door. “Hi, Mr. Donaldson. It’s Kira. I’m here to clean the basement.” “Hola, Kira! Yes, my wife already told me.” He unchained the lock, opened the door wide, and let her in. “Feel free to go downstairs. The cleaning tools are in the cabinet at the back,” he said, pointing toward the basement door before heading to the living room. “Aye, aye, sir!” The old man smiled, and that was Kira’s cue not to waste time. She gathered the tools and went downstairs. “Alright. I’ll start here first.” Meanwhile… “Alpha, two members of our pack were injured. They were attacked near the boundary of the eastern territory,” Kent mindlinked Caspian. “What? How? Are they okay? Did Loracia attend to them?” Loracia was the pack’s doctor. “Yes, Alpha. They’re currently resting.” “Good. Make sure to investigate. Do you have anyone in mind?” “None, Alpha. We don’t have any leads yet, but we’ve deployed two groups to continue searching the eastern territory.” “Warn the others of a possible attack. I’ll raise this with the council before taking further action. For now, send two sentinels, two lead warriors, and several scouts to the eastern borders.” Caspian commanded. “Copy, Alpha.” Caspian ended the mindlink and called for an emergency meeting with the Gammas and neighboring Alphas. No one dares to hurt my pack! Caspian’s howl carried both threat and fury, terrifying everyone who heard it. No one had ever gone against the Great Alpha. Caspian, Alpha of the Red Valley Moon Pack, was one of the strongest in Northern America. Behind his innocent and celestial looks lay a dangerous monster. He was respected across territories for his fairness and for being a strong ally, which was exactly why no one dared cross him. To enemies, he was a monster. But there was one thing he lacked—his Luna. He had attended several mating balls and visited countless packs, but still hadn’t found her. Both he and his wolf, Fenrir, longed for their mate. Later, connecting his mindlink to the whole pack, Caspian announced: “Listen, Red Valley Moon Pack. If anyone looks suspicious, report it immediately. Use your phones, use the mindlink—whatever it takes. Security will be tight from now on!” That night, all Gamma Council members and neighboring Alphas gathered in the meeting hall. “Thank you for coming. Some of you may be wondering why we’re here. I’ll be blunt: two of my pack members were injured in an attack. The attackers remain unidentified.” Gasps filled the hall, followed by loud murmurs. “Silence!” Caspian banged the table, his voice booming. “You all know I hate traitors! Did anyone forget the peace treaty we signed years ago?” Markus, Alpha of the Silver Moon Pack, stood. “I assure you, Caspian, my pack has done no harm to yours.” “I second that,” added the Alpha of the Moonlight Pack. “Whoever did this should suffer.” Others voiced their support. Eventually, suspicion turned inward. It could be an inside job—someone trying to sow discord among packs. They agreed each Alpha would investigate their own pack and report back to Caspian. After hours of debate, they sealed the agreement with signatures and adjourned. When the hall cleared, only Caspian remained on his throne, deep in thought. Suddenly, a voice echoed. “The answer lies in the hands of the celestial being.” Alarmed, Caspian growled, “Show yourself!” “Find her, and you all shall be safe. Fail to seek her, and chaos will consume you.” “Who are you?” Caspian demanded, searching the room. In a blink, a radiant woman in a white silk robe appeared. Her beauty stunned him, but what shook him more was the immense power radiating from her. His skin prickled with goosebumps. “Moon Goddess…” He immediately shifted into his wolf form and bowed in respect. “Danger lies ahead, Caspian. You must protect the celestial being before it’s too late.” “But how?” With a wave of her hand, a vision appeared—a woman, a vampire, and a school. “Everything must fall into place before the Lord of Darkness comes. Find them, protect them, and you will survive.” “Where can I find them?” “Listen to your heart. You and she are connected. Of all werekinds, only you hold the power to find what you seek.” “And if I fail?” “Bloodshed. Death. The end of your kind. No peace.” “Why me?” “It is your destiny. You alone have the power to protect them.” She smiled gently. “Open your eyes, Caspian. Seek, and you shall find.” “Moon Goddess, tell me how. I don’t think I have—” “Do not doubt me, Caspian.” He lowered his head. “My apologies, Moon Goddess.” “Believe in what seems impossible. The answer has already been given to you.” A blinding light engulfed the hall, and the Moon Goddess vanished. Caspian, left in wolf form, stood frozen—dumbfounded.
