Chapter NineIt had only been a week. One lousy week. Meghan didn’t know if she would last much longer. She hadn’t believed Billy Allen, but she should have. Should have known that he would not have lied to her. That he had proved to be her only remaining friend made it all the harder. He’d always had a good sense of how people worked, but he never leveraged it to advance himself in the ranks of government. He really did just want to serve like so few of the others. Worse yet, she was marked. “Why can’t they stare at someone else?” she griped at Colin in a whisper the next time they were back at the book cart together. “Who?” his whisper was loud enough to be heard two floors down.
