“Please,” she cut me off, a flicker of her old smirk returning. “You have that look. The ‘I've-assessed-the-terrain-and-I 'm-moving-out’ look. It’s the same one you had when you decided to stop trying to kill Astrid and just annoy her instead.”
A snort of laughter escaped me before I could stop it. “It’s a versatile look.”
“So? You want to come with us to the Phoenix Realm?"
“Yes.”
Her expression softened. “You’ll love it, Sera. The skies… they’re like nothing you’ve ever seen.” She looked down at her stomach again, her voice dropping to a whisper. “I can’t wait for our little chicken to see it.”
The ridiculous, heartfelt term should have sounded absurd. But from her, right now, it didn’t.
