  What William said completely shattered Elsie’s dignity, dragging her into a repetitive loop of self-doubt and emotional breakdown.   It made her feel like someone like her really was unworthy of love.   How could she ever think he loved her? She must’ve been delusional.   He probably thought she was pathetic. Cheap and ridiculous.   Back then, it was like she had one foot over the edge of a cliff, about to fall with no one to catch her.   She spaced out a lot during the day, and at night, the huge wedding room felt so empty it was suffocating.   She couldn’t sleep for nights on end, and the nightmares from her childhood came back.
