Contractions were capable of being ignored if one concentrated enough. At least, that's what Ellie told herself early one fall morning when she woke up with the realization that the painful cramping she was feeling from time to time in her stomach were getting more regular and stronger. They were working in the office in River's village, and the midwife, Nancy, had been alerted that she should be at the ready, so there was no reason for Ellie to panic.
