Chapter 1
Summer P. O. V I woke up around 5 am feeling disoriented. I have no idea why I feel like I was hit by a ton of bricks. Okay, I lied, maybe I do know why. Memories of last night in the club flashed before my eyes which made me smile. It was Natalie's birthday last night so she decided to celebrate at the hottest club in town. And boy... was it hot. We danced all night taking shots after shots. Natalie can hold her liquor like a boss. Me? Not so much. This is why I'm laying here in bed and my head feels like someone beat my skull with a hammer. I'm never drinking again. I made myself a promise that I made at least a thousand times before. It's not like I don't know how irresponsible underage drinking is and how I could get in huge trouble if I ever get caught, but so far, I haven't. I went into the kitchen to pour myself a glass of orange juice. Vitamin C is a solution to every problem, right? Just as I sat down to enjoy some alone time with my cat Mr. Boots, my phone started to make the most obnoxious ringing sounds, and I almost dropped my glass. "Summer's at your service," I answer, doing my best military impression. "Shit, shit, shit fuck!" Natalie cried on the other line. "Don't tell me, Harry Styles canceled his tour ruining your dream to become Mrs. Styles," I say. "This is serious! No, not just serious. It's borderline tragic. I freaking lost one of my $8000 diamond earrings at the club. My mom's going to kill me!" Natalie screamed into my ear through the phone. Oh, how I wish my problems consisted of things like losing an earring that's a price of a used car. But anyway, we aren't focusing on me right now. "Well maybe we can go purchase a duplicate and your mom will never know?" I suggested. "It's a Limited-Edition Tiffany and co lotus-shaped $8000 earring!" Natalie said all that in one breath. "Even if I had $8000 I'll never find another one that looks exactly like that. I'm royally screwed!" "Shh... breathe Natalie, Kum bah yah." I cooed. "Kum bah yah my ass! You have to help Meeee! Natalie whined. "Okay okay jeesh, what's your plan?" I ask. "We have to go back to the club and search for it," Natalie replied. "Um... honey, I hate to break it you but it'll be like searching for a needle in a haystack. No... scratch that, it'll be more like searching for hay in a needle stack." I said. "We still have to try! Please please Summer help me? I'm your best friend." Natalie cried. I sighed. Natalie has always been overly dramatic about everything. Who cares about a stupid earring? "Fine, but just so you know, I'm putting my neck on the line here by sneaking out twice. My aunt might deep fry me and eat me for breakfast if I get caught, but I'm doing this for you." I was only half kidding. "Oh my God thank you so much Summer, I owe you one." she hung up. I sighed as I see my douche canoe cousin enter the kitchen with a smug look on his face. "Oh look, if it isn't the great Markie Mark, first of his name, the cousin extraordinaire!" I chirped. "What the fuck is your problem?" Mark barked. I threw my arms up feigning shock at his unruly behavior. " I was only complimenting you. Who peed in your cereal this morning?" I smirked. Mark thinks he got that cool bad boy thing going for him but he is an actual idiot. Messing with his two brain cells is my favorite morning activity. "Don't make me throw up. It's bad enough that I get to look at your ugly face first thing in the morning." Mark sneered at me. "Oooooh, sick burn! You just hurt Steve." I pouted. "Steve?" Mark asked. "My last feeling," I replied nonchalantly. "You're dumb, I'm out of here." he gets up to head out the door, leaving me all alone in the kitchen. I quickly finish my juice and head up to the room to get ready to go to my weekend job at Sally's cupcakes. My home away from home. The only good thing in my life right now is to inhale the sweet aroma of strawberry vanilla cupcakes and caramel mocha latte every Saturday and Sunday. I put on a pair of denim shorts and a light pink top and walked out of the house. Sally's cupcakes were only three blocks away so I didn't need to drive. Not that I have a car anyway. Aunt Margaret took my paycheck every month and would rather pluck her nails out than spend a dime on me. Unbeknownst to her, I'm secretly putting aside a small number of tips I earn to save up for a car, and hopefully for my grand escape from this hell hole. I made it to the restaurant and put it on my apron. "Hey Summer." Kevin greeted me. He works in the kitchen and was responsible for making those out of the world desserts. He is a 45 years old widower who never had any children. This is why he always treated me like a daughter and I appreciate having an actual father figure to rely on. "Would you try this sample and tell me what you think?" Kevin said, handing me a small plastic cup with a tiny piece of cake. I put it in my mouth and it melted. It tasted sweet and airy and absolutely amazing. "Oh my God! I think I just tasted the most heavenly piece of dessert in my life. This is how I imagined the rainbow would taste like." I pretended to pass out. Kevin rolled his eyes and smiled. "Always so dramatic." I proceeded to say something sassy but was interrupted by the dinging sound from the door indicating a customer just walked in. I squinted my eyes to take a good look at the mountain that stood in front of me. The man got to be at least 6 ft 5. His tailored white shirt fit him perfectly which showed off his well-toned and muscular body. His rolled-up sleeves exposed his muscular forearms that were covered in tattoos. Stop objectifying the poor guy Summer, I scolded myself in my head and quickly looked at his face. He has dark blonde hair and light grey eyes. His jaw looks like it is sharp enough to cut me if I get too close. Aside from looking like he should be enlisted as a Greek God, his demeanor was cold and intimidating. My overconfident self was feeling a little nervous. "Hi, welcome to Sally's cupcakes! How may I indulge your sweet tooth today?" I finally managed to say Sally's ridiculous slogan. He looked at me for a minute with such intensity that made me gulp. As if he was trying to decide if I was worthy of his time. He finally cleared his throat and pointed at the chocolate ganache cupcake on the display. Weird... he didn't seem like the chocolate cupcake type. I quickly took one out and placed it inside the pink box and looked at him. "Anything else?" I asked, trying to sound friendly and confident. He shook his head no. Ah...the silent type I see. I rang it up and told him the price. He slapped a fifty dollar bill on the table in front of me and I proceeded to count his change. "Keep the change." He said in a deep husky voice. Damn... did his voice had to be sexy too? He walked out of the door with his $3.50 cupcake, making me $46.50 richer in tips. Sexy and rich? Some people just have it all.
