  The doorbell echoed through the hall—Emmanuel was here. The maid opened the door, and Benjamin Wakefield, his wife Theresa Wakefield, and their daughter Lilith exchanged knowing smiles and stood up to greet their guest.   Standing at the entrance, Emmanuel looked immaculately sharp in a deep navy velvet suit, holding a bouquet of roses in his hand.   "Emmanuel's here, come on in!" Theresa greeted him warmly.   "Wow, those roses are gorgeous! Lilith, look, he's so thoughtful," she added with a grin.   "Actually, these are for you, Aunt Theresa.
