“Miss Taylor, is something wrong?” Charlotte blinked, her tone calm but distant. She was grateful Cassandra had stood up for her earlier, but she didn’t show it much.
“Why?” Cassandra asked, clearly worked up. The question had been bugging her all afternoon. “Why did you leave the Hawthorne family and end up working here?”
Charlotte had given so much to her mom, to the Hawthorne family, even to her as she grew up. All those years, all that loyalty… even after Faye passed, with her status in that household, no one would’ve dared say anything even if she stayed and did nothing.
And even if she had wanted to leave, her father and grandfather would have made sure she was taken care of for life.
So why did she end up working like this?
