“Val, I’m home! Start the tub and hold the messages,” Jade yelled to the security mike on the gatepost, then walked up the last few steps to her door and touched her hand computer to the lock. As soon as she got through the steel door she dumped the duffel bag on the floor and headed back to the hydrotub she could hear filling in the bathroom. Each step felt like another climb up the exposed Haldek cliff. The strange floating feeling, mixed with exhilaration and the edges of tiredness, that was so common at the end of a battle won would desert her shortly, and there would only be enough energy left to lie down before sleep overwhelmed her.
