After leaving work, the drove to my parents’ estate was quiet, but it felt good. Now it was time to take a step back and spend some time with my family.
When I pulled into the driveway, I saw James already there, helping Dad unload a few bags from the car. He looked up and waved. I smiled, feeling a warmth in my chest.
“Hey, Sophie,” he said as I stepped out. “How are you holding up after last week?”
“I’m good,” I replied, hugging him. “It feels strange, but good. Finally, it’s over.”
Dad came up behind us, clapping a hand on my shoulder. “We are glad to see you home. You’ve been through a lot, Sophie.”
Mom joined us, smiling softly. “Come in, we have everything ready for dinner. Your favorite dishes.”
