Pain burns me from the inside out. It’s not sharp—it’s corrosive, like acid dripping through my veins, eating away at my organs, little by f*cking little. Every breath feels like it’s slicing through raw tissue. Aric is snarling and snapping his jaws in the darkness of my mind, his rage echoing in the void like thunder in a cave. I can’t see him. I can only hear him off in the distance.
I push myself upright, my muscles screaming in protest the entire time. The world flickers before my eyes—once, twice—before finally settling once again into a heavy, suffocating black void. There is no light source anywhere, and for a moment I wonder if I've gone blind. Or worse—dead.
