Anna POV
I woke up to the sun shining through the window into my room. A glance at the alarm clock told me that I still had enough time for my appointment with Oliver.
I got up from my bed a little stiffly. Yesterday I had packed all my things that I didn't need until my move on Saturday. All the things I no longer needed were already packed in my parents' garage. There were already some boxes there that I had never unpacked since moving here from the student dormitory.
After I had showered and got dressed, I still had about an hour until I had to leave. I was in a really good mood as I was looking forward to my meeting with Oliver later. I had missed him this week. I grabbed my laptop and went into the kitchen where I bumped into my mother.
“Good morning dear. Did you sleep well?” she asked me lovingly as always.
“Yes, like a rock, I packed everything yesterday and got it ready for the move next week.”
“It's such a shame that you're moving out again next week. I've seen so little of you in the last five years.”
I knew my mom wasn't saying that to make me feel bad, but because she liked having me around.
“I know mom, I missed you too. Now I only live 10 minutes away from you. We'll see each other regularly now, I'll come to see you and your delicious food a lot more than you'd want,” I say jokingly.
“You can come home whenever you want,” my mother says with a laugh. “Do you still have to work?”
“Yes, I still have to prepare for the exams for next week.”
“Then I'll let you work, would you like some coffee?”
“Yes, but I can make one myself, mom.”
“Let me spoil you while I still can, after you're in your own apartment you'll have to do everything yourself again.” my mother said with a laugh as she fiddled with the coffee machine.
“Thank you,” I said as she brought me a coffee.
It felt nice to work in the kitchen while my mother baked the bread for the evening. My mother was the perfect housewife and had been a wonderful mother to us. She had made our house a home. She cooked almost everything from scratch and it always tasted so much better than anything else.
After my coffee, I said goodbye to my mother and took the train into town.
On the way into town, I watched the houses pass me by. Again I thought about whether I would meet my mate now that I was back home. As a little girl, I had looked forward to finding my mate because I saw every day how happy my parents were together. My brother had found his mate Sophia and was overjoyed with her.
If you don't find your mate by the age of 30, you can also take a chosen mate. However, this is rather rare as most people find their mate before then. I still had 4 years.
Now that I was back in my home town and no longer had all the hustle and bustle of my studies, I realized how lonely I felt.
It had been great to be away and independent but I envied my friends or my brother for not being alone anymore.
What was wrong with me, why was I suddenly so sentimental and thinking so much about my love life?
I hadn't given much thought to my mate for the last 5 years during my studies. Many of my classmates had found their mates either before or during their studies. However, many also had relationships without a mate, although these tended to be s****l in nature. What was the point of falling in love if there was a perfect and destined partner for you somewhere. Even if I could choose a mate in 4 years, I don't know which man I would choose. If I don't find my mate, I will probably just stay alone.
I didn't have a real relationship during my time at university either. I did go on dates from time to time but it never worked out. Jesus! I was 26 years old and had never even been kissed.
As I got out of the train, I took a deep breath of the autumn air and went to look for Oliver. I could already see him standing next to a café where he always waited for me.
“How was your first week?” Oliver asked me casually as he offered me his arm.
“Good, how was your conference?” I replied and took his arm. Together we made our way to the lively neighborhood where all the good places to eat and drink were.
“Oh don't remember it, it was so boring. These events always last forever because there's always someone asking 100 questions.” I laughed at Oliver's pained expression. He loved his job as head of the college and was absorbed in it. But he hated these meetings and charity work that had nothing to do with his actual job.
“Poor you, luckily you've made it for another year.” I tried to cheer him up and Oliver smiled at me.
” Well, that's the word. What's the plan for today?” Oliver asked me mischievously.
“Would you go shopping with me? I still need a few things for my new apartment.”
“Of course!” Oliver is thrilled, interior design is his secret hobby. "What do you need? Oh, I know the perfect store! We'll do that after lunch. That reminds me, is it okay if Michael joins us? He hasn't seen you for so long and wanted to come too.”
I laughed at Oliver's enthusiasm.
“Of course,” I said.
Michael had gone to school with Oliver and me and had been friends with us. He'd been a consultant at a law firm for a few years. After the incident with Norah, he had immediately enrolled in his first law course.
“How is Michael doing? He's at this law firm now, isn't he?”
"That's right, he's been working there for two years now as an ethics consultant and is also taking his bar exam. He wants to be a judge. He's just as much of a do-gooder as you are,” Oliver explained with a grin.
“Do you still have contact with many of our friends from school?”
“Yes, not with all of them, of course, but with the most important ones. Romy recently got mated and had a daughter. Beth, you know, opened the cafe with her mate, she was the first one of us to find him, right after her first shift.” As I was listing all the funny stories from our school days came to mind, knowing Oliver, he was thinking about them too.
“Do you remember when Romy was convinced that I was her mate?” Oliver asked me with a laugh.
“Yes, especially her reasoning was hilarious. She thought that because you were both blonde and had been friends since childhood, you must be mates,” I said, laughing.
“And now she's found her mate and he's dark-haired.” Oliver said, at which point we both burst out laughing.
Suddenly I had the same feeling as yesterday and smelled that heavenly smell of summer and spring again. I stopped in my tracks and looked around.
“Are you all right?” Oliver asked worriedly.
“Yes, it's just...” I began.
Then I saw them. There were two of them. The eyes that were watching me. They belonged to the most breathtaking men I had ever seen. They were the Alpha twins Leon and Jason, even though the last time I had seen them was 5 years ago I recognized them instantly. They were certainly a foot taller than me. Their faces were striking and their brown hair was shoulder length. Leon had his hair tied up, while Jason wore it loose. Their bodies were toned and without an ounce of fat, which was clearly visible through the tight T-shirts they both wore. Their eyes, which stared at me, were a brown that reminded me of chocolate. Completely shocked, I stared at them. Suddenly I realized that the two alphas were my mates. How else could I explain my reaction to them? Wow, the Alpha twins were my mates. I was immediately overcome with calm and joy at having found my match after all these years. The mate-bond. Once you were near your mate you felt safe and calm.
Despite the calm, I couldn't stop my fear of having a mate.
Involuntarily, I clutched my hand tighter in Oliver's arm. This made Jason growl and he rushed towards us with Leon behind him.
“How dare you touch our mate!” Jason growled.
